We have been incurring expenses in protest of a private developer building a new 23+ acre Class 3 Landfill in Harrison, TN. So far, the expenses have been trivial and we've gladly shouldered them personally. Since we were unsuccessful in preventing the rezoning of this piece of residential property from Agricultural (A1) to Manufacturing (M1) we must now form a more organized campaign. To do so we must incur greater expense associated with hiring legal representation and a PR firm to help us engage all Hamilton County residents.

We must do whatever we can to protect this natural area and ensure the health and safety of all of our neighbors downstream for generations to come. If you are unaware of the situation, here is a brief history. In 2007 a private developer attempted to purchase and develop 190+ acres in this area. Through the cooperation of our neighbors we were able to prevent this from happening. Now, they are back in an attempt to ask for a smaller parcel in the hope that the County Commission will look upon them favorably and help them set a precedent for future expansion.

This parcel and those adjacent acres are not only in a residential area, but also are atop a ridge where water drains straight into the Tennessee River which provides us all with drinking water and countless recreational opportunities.

Harrison already has a large active garbage landfill and closed landfills. There are alternative sites in Bradley County (active) and at the VAAP (inactive). This growing region is home to a diverse community centered around Harrison Bay State Park, Bear Trace golf course, and the Tennessee River. It is unconscionable that the city and county would consider building a Class 3 Dump in the middle of all of this. The health consequences for our children and community from more polluted ground water and surface water runoff would be immeasurable.

Further, the adverse financial impact on the home values in this now desirable area, would greatly impede growth which would in turn, reduce tax revenue to the county. Another Class 3 Dump does not belong in Harrison. Please act now by letting our County Commissioners and County Mayor know how you feel about this. Do not allow political posturing to destroy this neighborhood in a growing part of Hamilton County.
