Kane's Service Trip to India

Hi! My name is Kane Palmer. I am graduating from Nordhoff High School June of 2016, less than one month away. I’ve decided to kick off off my college and adult life with a taste of the real world, a service trip to India’s Maher Ashram in Pune . This is the culminating trip of the Insight Teen Leadership Program. We will be accompanied by incredible coaches and parents from Insight Seminars.
The money raised will be used to fund my travel costs as well provide educational funds for the Maher Ashram started by Sister Lucy , a nun as adored as Mother Teresa. Sister Lucy has been helping women, children, and the destitute as long as I have been living on this planet, 18 years.
This trip also has personal significance for me. Both of my grandmothers began international travels long before most tourist were doing so. Grandmother Ward traveling over 60 years ago to places like Cambodia and Grandmother Palmer owned a travel agency. I guess you could say it’s in my DNA!
In addition, my stepfather Rakesh is from the same part of India as Sister Lucy, Kerala. This trip will give me the opportunity to immerse myself in his culture, something even my mother hasn’t had a chance to do yet. Although Rakesh is not traveling with me, he has had fun teaching me about Indian culture and the interesting social norms like the bucket wash.
