As you may know, for more than a year Daryl Lu, "Doc" to most of us, has been battling esophageal cancer with great dignity and courage. Without complaint he has undergone months of radiation and two major surgeries, not to mention countless other serious procedures and weeks in intensive care. After some unwelcome news, Daryl and Charlotte are now preparing for a third, more extensive and complex surgery to remove the balance of Daryl's esophagus and replace it with a section from his intestine. THE FINANCIAL CHALLENGE
As you can imagine, the medical expenses are staggering, even for a family with health insurance. The Lu's insurance has not come close to covering all of Daryl's current and anticipated future medical costs, and doesn't pay anything for certain prohibitively expensive medications, treatments, rehab and equipment. We all know that a serious illness, particularly one with a long rehabilitation horizon, can be financially devastating, even for a responsible household like the Lu's.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Several of you have contacted us to ask how we might help Daryl and Charlotte. In addition to your emotional support, we are asking for your help with the Lu's medical expenses. The medical bills are flooding in, and a little financial support will go a long way to keeping Daryl's focus on defeating the cancer. This request was not initiated by Daryl and Charlotte - but from those of us most familiar with their situation.
Contributions in any amount are welcome. Donations can be anonymous (except to Daryl) if you prefer .
To start the fund, we have pledged $1,000 each, along with the Lu's good friend, Dan Lawton.
Our respect and love for Daryl and Charlotte have grown tremendously through this ordeal. Their faith, bravery, patience and selflessness is truly remarkable and inspirational.
