Darcy - Home for the Holidays
An event earlier this year left me promising myself that I wasn't going to be the person who "thought about it, but didn't." And there's been many times since then I've acted because of it.
I met Darcy while she was resting her blistered feet on a bench nearby my usual drop off location for bakery shipping. She had her 4-year-old daughter with her out in the cold. Everything they owned was in a couple bags on the bench. I struck up a conversation and ended up putting them in a hotel room for the night. Darcy said it would be the best night of sleep she would have had in 3 years. We exchanged names and phone numbers and kept in touch.
At my bakery, the Goodie Shop, we started a donation cookie ("Home for the Holidays") to raise money for a down payment on an apartment for her family. A customer asked why we hadn't shared this with news sources, so we did! Here's the story from ABC6.
