A co-worker's (Yvonne) husband (Chuck) went into the hospital before Thanksgiving and is still currently going back and forth from the hospital to a nursing home. Chuck has had 4 back surgeries since going into the hospital before Thanksgiving and since then has developed numerous infections and currently is unable to walk due to be paralyzed from his hips down. Chuck is currently in a nursing home and is still fighting off infection and Yvonne is hoping to be able to bring her husband home. Us, as her work family, would like to try and raise as much money as we can to help Yvonne cover medical bills, nursing home bills, and anything else that will help cover the costs of being in the hospital. I started giving blood back in 1985. Originally I was scared to death to do this because of the needle. Once I started and began to read information on the saved lives I began to feel like this is what I should do to make a difference. When I worked with the county the blood drive was a big deal and many came out to DSS to give. I wish it was like that here. I wish the room would be filled like it was with the county. As many of the staff know what happened to my husband last October. From the period of 10/30/17 to the last week of February 2018 he has needed over 18 units of whole blood and I’m sure that won’t be the last of this. It is my hope that the blood drive this year will be overloaded with folks that want to give. I am not saying to give because of my husband but for the sake of having a steady supply of blood for all who will one day need it. I never thought in a million years that what happened to my husband would have happened or if he ever would have needed this amount of blood, he too was a regular donor. It is my hope that you will be able to give at this blood drive even if you have been deferred in the past. I have been deferred because of my iron level but believe me I will start taking those iron pills now to be ready for the 23rd. Many of you all know me, I’ve been around BHC for a long time, many know you may speak to me and I may smile or growl at you depending on what time of day it is but if you give this time around I promise to SMILE back.
