Four Hundred and Ninety Four
Donation protected
Since the devastating loss of our beautiful youngest son Canon in 2013, you have helped bring a bit of daylight to the darkness by participating in Canon’s To the Moon & Back Collection. We have donated thousands of books and countless stuffed animals to Children’s Mercy and for that I am truly thankful.
After last year’s collection, I began feeling called to honor Canon’s memory in a different direction. Losing a child is even worse than your deepest nightmare can conjure up. In an instant your life is shattered. The pain continues to build as you begin dealing with funeral homes, cemeteries, and monument companies. All these bills and invoices for something you don’t want to deal with in the first place.
One of the most traumatic experiences of planning Canon’s funeral was when we were shown the casket options for such a small child. I had a dear friend that had warned me to be prepared for this part. Even with that warning, I was physically ill when we were shown this plastic box that resembled an upside down Rubbermaid bin. I could not bury my son in that. Jeff was able to find a more appropriate casket, however this just added more to the total costs.
This year, in memory of Canon, I would like to ask each of you to donate $4.94 to a fund that will go toward helping other families in situations like ours deal with the heartbreak of burying a child. This amount represents each day that we reveled in the joy of having Canon a part of our lives. Each day that he spent in my arms and by my side. Four Hundred and Ninety Four days of love.
I want to be able to give other families the relief of having their child’s headstone paid for. I want to allow a mother to bury her child in an actual casket, not a horrific plastic box. I want to let a father grieve without worrying about the financial burden such loss can cause. I want siblings to pick out the most beautiful flowers. I want to help shoulder the pain that child loss causes. I need your help to do this.
I have set up a donation page through the GoFundMe website. I do want you to know that they will deduct a 7.9% fee as well as 30 cents per donation. If you like, please increase your donation by 69 cents for a total of $5.63 to offset these fees. You can make your contribution through there by clicking this link:

Alternatively, you can send a check made payable to the Memorial Fund for Canon James. Please mail any contributions to me at 840 N. Mulberry in Gardner, KS 66030. If you are able to collect multiple donations, perhaps through your work or friends, please let me know and I will pick them up
It is most definitely out of my comfort zone to ask for money, but I hope you will feel it in your heart to help this cause. Please think of Canon. Think of the pain in my heart. Think of the tears Tyler and Ellie have shed sitting on the floor of their brother’s room. Your $4.94 is so much more than money.
Thank you.
