Vols Help Vets

WHO WE ARE

We are five students from the University of Tennessee working collaboratively with the non-profit Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing in order to raise money for 35 veterans to attend their annual Veterans on Water trip on May 18th. We care about this organization because they have a unique way of giving back to our veterans who have sacrificed so much for this country.

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF) of Knoxville is a local 501(c)(3) non-profit that aids veterans in the East Tennessee area by providing fly-fishing courses and activities including education and outings for disabled active-duty military personnel and veterans to aid with physical and emotional rehabilitation. PHWFF was founded in 2005 and is now working nationwide with Warrior Transition Units and Veterans Affairs Medical Centers.

PHWFF actively aids veterans through their classes and events. They offer a high-quality fly-fishing program and a supportive community to heal. They pursue the core values of compassion, accountability, excellence and community. PHWFF uses these values to effectively aid veterans in the ways they need most.

WHAT WE NEED

We are raising money to fund 35 veterans to attend the Veterans on Water event on May 18th. The cost is $40 per veteran, and the price will cover food, transportation, fishing rods, and flys. The grand total for the event will be $1,400. Veterans will be driving themselves, those who cannot drive will be picked up in vans and taken to the event. The event is a day long and a group of 3-5 veterans will be accompanied by a guide to assist them throughout the whole event.

HOW IT HELPS

This trip will give veterans an opportunity to enjoy an outing with other members, experiencing a greater sense of community. They gain a sense of camaraderie by participating in activities with other veterans. While fly fishing with ties that they hand made, this event will allow for rehabilitation physically and mentally by being immersed in an environment of everyday leisure activities. These outings help connect the veterans with the community through fly-fishing in beautiful locations in the Knoxville and surrounding areas.
