8th Street Church Steeple

We want to bring hope and change to our lives, and to our city!
As part of the complete restoration of the building, we are asking for help to replace the historic steeple of the 8th Street Church in Midtown, Oklahoma City. Our congregation has committed over a million dollars in the restoration thus far, but now we need some help to put on this "finishing touch."
Who are we?
Midtown Church OKC, a daughter church of Bethany First Church of the Nazarene, launched in November 2015, and took ownership of the 8th Street Church July 2017. Restoration began soon after, and the congregation plans to worship in the building by Easter 2018.
Making something old new again
Located at 701 NW 8th Street, the 8th Street Church was constructed by the First German Methodist congregation in 1907, under the leadership of Oklahoma City's first city planner, Anton Classen. It is evident it was crafted with care, housing 22 stunning Jacoby stained glass windows and crowned with a bell tower and impressive steeple. Without a congregation for several decades, it was most recently the home of Skyline Urban Ministries. In 2011, the original steeple was removed due to deterioration beyond repair.
Project Details and Cost
Currently the installation cost is $25,000; but we will incur a 9% increase after January 1. We also need to pay for the rental of a crane, and plan for any last minute adjustments or additions. Our goal of $32,000 covers the cost of the increased installation price, crane rental, and a $2,000 cushion.
“A piece of Heaven on Earth”
Throughout its lifetime, the steeple represented help and hope in the community. Located just one block from St. Anthony Hospital, the church is in clear view from many places in the hospital. One nurse shared that "anytime there was a difficult moment in surgery room or when they could not save someone's life, she would look through the window of the surgery room where she could see the steeple, perfectly framed with the cross on top, and she would pray. 'It was so beautiful and perfectly placed there in the window,' she said. 'It was like a piece of heaven on earth.' It got her through those moments as a young woman." Our dream is to restore this building not only for ourselves, but as a gift to Oklahoma City. The restoration of this building, especially the steeple, is a physical sign of the restoration we want to see in our neighborhood, in the lives of our neighbors, and our city.
