BrickDreams - Brick by Brick

We started with BrickDreams after reading a flyer posted at Starbucks, asking for Lego and tennis ball can donations.  We didn’t have Legos to donate at the time, but had access to hundreds of tennis ball cans. Fast-forward to today. Hundreds of volunteer hours later and a year of heading the youth charity under our belt, we are  driving BrickDream’s mission of serving children of domestic violence and abuse.   Brick by brick.

BrickDreams gathers donated Legos from across the country, sorts them and redistributes them to child victims of domestic violence and abuse.  "Boxes big and small come to our post office box, according to Rutz. Some boxes contain notes, stories and sometimes pictures of those donating.  All encourage us to keep up the good work.”

A child may leave the house quickly, often without a lot of things. They may be able to get clothes and toiletries, but they can’t something like Legos to help them escape.

Partnerships with police, sheriff, county and state agencies across California allow BrickDreams to have impact. Many of the police and sheriff agencies BrickDreams works with carry the cans in their cars and give them to kids when responding to domestic violence calls. It helps during a stressful time.

The money raised will be used to purchase permanent, large onsite shed storage, allowing us to eliminate montly rental fees. Storage is our biggest challenge right now. Additional money beyond the cost of the storage  will be used to help pay the filing fees to get 501c3 status as a non-profit charity.

There are some agencies where we drop off cans where the kids are on site.  These are the most memorable visits for us because we get to see how the simple Legos make the kids so happy. Honestly, these visits are also the hardest too.  When we see boys our age, we don’t forget those visits.
