Project Bio:

Playland at 43Avenue is a ‘Parklet’ style plaza in an abandoned school yard in San Francisco’s Sunset neighborhood. The project is intended to be a public laboratory for the City to work with local communities to temporarily test new ideas. Materials and design interventions are meant to be temporary and easily reversible, should the trial run demonstrate the need for design changes. The SF Planning department held four workshops to figure out how to reinvent this old abandoned schoolyard to create a community resilient space.

The project has many components, including a community garden, picnic area, bbq pits, basketball courts, art installations, ping pong tables, climbing structures, an artist’s studio, and of course, the skate park.

The SF Skateboarding Association and Left Side Skateboards are raising money for the skate park. The park is all volunteer built, fueled by our love for skateboarding and the need for more skate parks in San Francisco’s neighborhoods. The city gave us a very small budget, which got us about halfway to completion. It also enabled us to bring the neighborhood and greater community together to form and shape the skate area to better fit the site. The main goal is to simply provide a safe and innovative place for the neighborhood’s youth to skateboard.

Although we are over budget we are refusing to stop the building. We are pushing forward for our Grand Opening, Saturday, May 7, which we hope to see you at whether you can contribute or not!

We need to raise $7,000 to complete the park. That money will allow us to purchase:

-Skate Lite
-Lumber and Building Materials
-Concrete
-Metal Coping
-Paint

This space will continue to grow. We do not see the park coming to a static finish, but instead, to be a place that will continually evolve to the neighborhood. Some additional growth ideas include a fun box manual pad, a hubba ledge, both a rainbow and flat rail, as well as many other ideas in the works. Most of the items could all be moved around in a modular way depending on how people want to skate on any particular day.

With your contribution we can finish building the first skate park in the San Francisco’s Sunset neighborhood! Please give whatever amount you can, as every dollar will help.
