Heart For Leah
My family needs alot of prayer and support during this very difficult time. My beautiful niece, her name is Leah Mendez. She is 11 year's old and is a bright ball of energy, and is a very loving little girl who likes to play with her friends, swim, and go to summer camps with her church. She was taken to the Little Company of Mary Hospital ER in San Pedro with stomach flu symptoms this past Saturday May 6, 2017. Upon receiving analysis results Doctors found fluid build up surrounding her liver, and heart. She was then transported to Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach CA. where they conducted further analysis. Unable to treat her due to not having the adequate medical equipment Leah needed for her condition, Leah was then transported via air medical helicopter to Children's Hospital Los Angeles, where Leah remains in very cridical condition, on a respiratory ventillation oxygen machine inside the ICU. Once stabalized Doctors conducted several analysis to try and determine why her heart is failing. Doctors conducted a MRI where they were able to determine that Leah has a rare heart condition called "Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and cannot pump blood efficiently. The decreased heart function can affect the lungs, liver, and other body systems, Dilated cardiomyopathy might not cause symptoms, but for some people it can be life-threatening. A common cause of heart failure — the heart's inability to supply the body with enough blood — dilated cardiomyopathy can also contribute to irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), blood clots or sudden death.
Monday night May 8, 2017 Leah developed a fever which led to her having seizures. Staff struggled to
stabilize Leah, there is not much the Doctors or staff can do. Leah's liver cannot tolerate any additional medication at this point. Leah's body core temperature is being managed by a Nonpharmacologic intervention equipment in an effort to control Leah's low grade fever to prevent further seizures. On Tuesday May 9, 2017 Leah unfortunately suffered a heart attack, and was in a full cardiac arrest. By the Grace of God, Doctors and medical staff were able to succesfully resucitate Leah, and stabalized her.
A team of Doctors, and several pediatric heart specialist conducted a meeting today May 10, 2017 to discuss Leah's treatment. Doctors have come to a conclussion that Leah needs a heart transplant in order to save her life. Leah will remain in the hospital and is scheduled to have a heart biopsy next week. This is the most recent information we have regarding Leah's condition at this time. We will continue to update this page daily as we receive new information and or updates.
I created this campaign to help my older brother Cesar Mendez and sister in-law Lucero Mendez with their financial responsbilities. They have both stopped working to be by their daughter Leah's bedside for a uncertain amount of time. Lucero, has not left her daugter Leahs bedside since this nighmare began May 6, 2017. As a mother myself my heart hurts to see them so distraught and heart broken over this horrible unexpected tragedy. I humbly ask if you can find it in your hearts to please make any donation to help support our family to get through this hard time. "All expenses for the Mendez Family during this difficult time."
Thank You for taking the time to read "heart for Leah" campaign story. Please feel free to share Leahs story with your family and friends.
NOTE: Per medical staff and Doctors Leah cannot receive any flowers, or balloons of any kind at this time until further notice.
Visitation is reserved for immediate family only at this time until further notice. Leah can however receive greeting cards. Please feel free to send any get well greeting cards to, "Leah Mendez". Further more, please feel free to ask any questions or concerns regarding Leah in the comments section in this campaign.
Leah is home!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Leah has been officially discharged from the hospital, and is now home and doing extremely well!!!! I've thought over and over what I would write when this day arrived. Now that it's finally here, I find myself overwhelmed with emotion. I go back in time and I read the updates I've posted and find myself crying. Not because I'm sad, but because how much of a powerful, inspirational story my niece Leah has to tell, and inspire others. How much Leah over came in such a short amount of time. How my niece was given a second chance.
I would really love to eventually post Leah's version of a testimony on this page for everyone to read. Leah's journey is such an incredible story, and has touched many, many hearts along the way. A true story of a heart warrior, and the amazing support and unity of an entire community.
You all are very special, and will always be a part of Leah's story. My family could not have gotten through this without everyone's support. It really touches my heart when I think of the entire movement Heart for Leah has created. It has also taught me a few things along the way. To Love.... to be a light in the darkest moment's, even if it's a small light... to have Hope, it has also strengthen my faith in God. Opened my eyes to humanitarianism. Good still exists...
It's been incredible. I cannot put together enough words to describe how grateful the entire Mendez family is. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. ❤
Leah will remain home from school for over an entire year. Given the Circumstances of having a heart transplant, Leah has to avoid big crowds, and heavily trafficked public places. So Leah will be home schooled, until Leahs immune system is strong enough, and she is cleared by her Doctor. Leah is currently taking over 20 different medications several times a day, and requires around-the-clock care. Leah requires a CPAP machine for bedtime.
- Continuous positive airway pressure therapy (CPAP ) uses a machine to help a person who has obstructive sleep apnea(OSA) breathe more easily during sleep. A CPAP machine increases air pressure in your throat so that your airway doesn't collapse when you breathe in.
Leah has been doing excellent, and her progress is absolutely incredible. Walking on her own at times, and slowly getting stronger everyday. Leah is so happy to finally be back home with her entire family. Leah is ready to put this chapter of her life behind her, and ready to conquer the future!!!
We continue to pray for the beautiful family who donated a heart for Leah. They are in our prayers every night. May they feel comfort in knowing that the legacy of their loved one will live on.
Thank you for always keeping Leah in your prayers. We will continue to update this page with the most recent information regarding Leahs progress. God bless you.
A Heart That Sings
In a world that sometimes seems
intent on stealing biggest dreams–
that takes those things we know are right
and puts them somewhere out of sight–
we still find hope in little things:
a child’s smile; a wagging tail;
an artist’s eye; a heart that sings.
These are things we know are real,
that we can see and hear and feel;
these are things that we can sense,
that touch our hearts in present tense.
But there are times we must believe
in things so hard to conceive:
anesthesia; lung machine;
Life now tied to things unseen–
surgeon’s hand; nurse’s skill;
knowledge; know-how; commitment; will;
God and faith and our good health;
and most of all to Life itself.
But you are ready; you’re prepared;
soon your heart will be repaired.
And when you wake up from this rest,
you’ll feel the rhythm in your chest–
subtle, perfect and oh so strong,
your heart now singing Life’s best song,
with hope restored in biggest things:
an active life; a family’s love;
a curious mind; a heart that sings.
Now you’re back where you belong
Sometimes you allow us, Lord,
To go through times of testing
And often, Lord, it may come to us
After a time of blessing
You let those times we go through
Be times of deeper work
To teach us, Lord, to trust in you
Even though we may hurt
We try so hard to understand
Just what is going on
And why we go through such a low
When before we felt so strong
And when our bodies are in such pain
And our minds are in the dark,
Why do doubts of your word, Lord,
Creep into our hearts?
We wonder where you are, O God,
In the midst of all our doubt
And why you even allow such trials
That seems to cloud you out
It often seems so hard for us
To trust you in these times,
We want you to remove the pain
In our bodies and our minds
And yes, O God, I know you heal
And give us hope to believe in
Then other times, you allow us to
Go through difficult seasons
But you know what's best for us
And you see the bigger picture,
You're always there to walk with us
Into a brighter, hope filled future.

Hi, today I have a wonderful update video of Leah's progress, put together by her older sibling jazmine. Ive provided the link below. Thank you for always keeping Leah in your prayers. Enjoy! God bless you.
Childrens hospital of LA is the best hospital for her condition, please have her family look into it. It may not be the best time, but when she gets a bit more stable she can be transferred. My 3yr old has been in 4 different hospitals, transferring her to CHLA was the best decision so far. Will be praying for this beautiful young lady.
Have been praying for you all. Anxiously waiting and reading all the updates. So grateful a heart has been found and hope everything is going well. Waiting for the day to see Leah out and about and enjoying her life again!
Thank you so very much for sharing the wonderful news that Leah is home. Praising God for answered prayers for Leah and family. And continuing to pray for the family who gave Leah a new heart. May the love and continued healing power of the Lord embrace you all.

Just wondering if Leah's mom still needs fabric. If so, how much and what kinds? Praying for Leah! ❤️
I am going to reserve (2) front row “Best seat in the house” tickets for Leah & a person of her choice. When she is ready and able to go out and be amongst the community again, I want to invite her to any Encoresouthbay production that she would like to attend. I’m praying that she’ll be attending one of our Fall shows. Please help her look up www.EncoreSouthBay.org and pick anyone she’d like to see. Please message me so I can coordinate with you. Warm hugs and Happy 4th of July Leah!. God is showing us HIS miracles one at a time through you. This picture today made my heart smile. :) Blessings, Jeannette Jones (parent volunteer with Encore Theatre Company. (I’m lighting a sparkler for you tomorrow night).
