Hope for Carlos #HARTFORDHERO

Carlos is a wonderful and inspiring 16-year-old boy from Hartford, CT. He goes to Bulkeley High School and is a huge sports fan. For a teenage boy, he is truly exceptional in his love for helping others and commitment to his family, especially his 8-year-old sister and 6-year-old brother.

He was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes at two years old and is very supportive of other kids with diabetes. He was a counselor in training this summer at Joslin Diabetes Camp and is in constant communication with his fellow campers. He hopes to continue working for camp and be a role model to others with the disease.

Despite all Carlos has already overcome, he is now faced with his most daunting obstacle yet. Carlos was involved in a tragic accident on Sunday, October 7th. Carlos unknowingly picked up what he thought was a piece of trash, which in reality, was a homemade explosive device. The device exploded in Carlos' hand causing severe burns and lacerations to his hands, face, chest and abdomen. Carlos also lost two fingers on his left hand and his doctors are hoping to preserve his other fingers.

Carlos has been incredibly brave throughout this entire situation. He is a hero to his mother and family who say Carlos prevented a young child from picking up the device. Carlos has a long road ahead of him. In his journey to recovery and healing, he will need multiple pieces of medical equipment and a possible prosthetic. Many accommodations will need to be made both at home and at school for Carlos to return to a normal life. Carlos' family is deeply committed to his recovery and return to health, however in the wake of the accident, they are facing a financial crisis.
