Save West River Pkwy
I would like toes the Parkway left as it is and a new bike trail built alongside it as originally proposed by the state. I think nys is railroading us into a plan of closing the parkway to cars that only benefits them and they will continue to not maintain it and it will become an eyesore
This is Ken Tornabene as a long time resident of the Island - West River Pkwy has always been one of the most Seance areas of the Island . Way change it now ?There's a old saying that say's " If it aint broken , don't fix it " Leave it alone . I now am retired and live in Florida , but I come up every year to visit friends ad family still there . One of the things I do is drive the Prkwy from Buckhorn to Beaver . Please dont take this away . If this is just a matter of who will be responcible for it then fine as long as it is not changed ...
Town To Take Over West River Service Road 20 Years Ago! Everything Old Is New Again!! - 2007 Posted by Teddy Linenfelser Planning was underway for the town to assume the ownership of the state-owned West River Parkway service road, according to an article by the late Marion E. Klingel in the September 25, 1987 edition of the Island Dispatch. The town board on Monday, September 21, 1987 indicated there were matters to be settled before it would accept the road. They included "the present condition of the thoroughfare which parallels West River Parkway, and the maintenance of it when it becomes town property," the article stated. The September 1987 article continues: "Reconstruction of the service road became a bone of contention between the state and the town about 1969. At a meeting in 1980 of town officials and Frontier State Park Commission and Department of Transportation officials, the highway department supervisor called attention to its deterioration. "A DOT proposal, turned down by the town board in December 1979, included widening the 8-mile stretch and providing four-foot shoulders at a cost of about $2.5 million. "Condemnation proceedings of West River Road filed in 1948 "assured the people in giving up their land they would have access to it and to the parkway," the town attorney reminded at that 1979 town board meeting. West River Service Road Repair Work To Begin - July 2007 According to Supervisor Peter A. McMahon, the contract to fix drainage problems and repair the West River Service Road should be awarded by the end of July. "Work could begin anytime after that," the supervisor said this week. "It's likely that the work will be completed by the end of the 2007 construction season. If that happens, the Town of Grand Island will take ownership of the road including snow removal and maintenance," he said. The cost of the work, which is being paid for by the State of New York, is about $1.5 million, Supervisor McMahon said.
