HomesNOW! Bellingham is a group of volunteers working together to provide homes and shelter for the homeless in Bellingham and Whatcom County.

A CALL TO ACTION

Jim Peterson had a dream since 1993 to start solving homelessness, one person at a time.

HomesNOW! has a plan that is very simple. The plan is just to go from Point A to Point B, and that is to take a homeless person off the street and house them, plain and simple.

Jim Peterson presented this plan to the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 1994 and they told Jim that the plan was too simple and would never work.

Jim never gave up on that dream. So Jim Peterson and Doug Gustafson started HomesNOW! to finally implement that dream. Last week we filed for 501c3 status and we received our certificate of incorporation.

Our plan is very simple. Build tiny homes and start putting people in them right away.

The next stage going forward is to start buying up boarded up homes and vacant lots
in Whatcom County and empower the homeless themselves to rehab the homes they are going to live in.

We're seeking donations in order for us to buy about 1 acre of land. We will use this land to build 4 Tiny Homes or to provide a safe place for people to park their car or camp.

In the meantime while we're waiting for enough donations to achieve that, and since winter is here, we're going to be focusing for the next few months on finding and providing cold weather gear for the homeless to survive the winter. By the time we have enough donations and find the piece of land we're looking for it will be spring and summer again and ideal for building.

List of items that would be helpful to bring as a donation:

1. Backpacks
2. Sleeping Bags and TENTS

On December 1st, HomesNOW! organized a camp-out at city hall for the purposes of raising awareness about homelessness in Bellingham and to raise awareness about the homeless crisis in order to stop the Homeless camp sweeps.

We have been camping out and will need lots of volunteers to help with a hot meal at least once a day . Also we would encourage people to help spread the word we need to do this to keep homelessness in the for front after the elections are over and to encourage the city to help the homeless.

The camp-out was only supposed to last 3 days, but more homeless people came, and now there's about 40 people camping out. It's not ideal but even having a tent and a blanket/sleeping bag is better than laying in the street in the cold and rain. When this city council meeting started there were tents all outside city hall, there are even more tents now.

Many of the homeless spoke to city hall as well as volunteers for HomesNOW. The list of demands is as follows:
1. A pathway to build a pilot project of 4 Tiny Homes and a service building.

2. Safe places for people to sleep outside without risk of being swept.

3. Safe places for cars/RVs to park for those living in vehicles.

4. Toilets and dumpsters near outdoor living sites.

5. Support Safe Storage Program (lease lockers to homeless for $0 with a contract). Available 24/7. NEEDS OF CAMP FOR WEDS 12-6-17 1. LUNCH 2. DINNER 3. FIREWOOD 4. TRASH BAGS 5. WATER

6. MORE CAMPING CHAIRS

7. MONEY DONATIONS TO KEEP CAMP GOING https://www.gofundme.com/2n7ur74f

8.CALL THE MAYOR ASK HER TO GIVE US A SAFE PLACE TO CAMP

9. Sleeping bags and blankets

10. Coats, long-johns, hats, gloves and other warm weather gear

Winter is here and it's getting cold out there, we will be using our donations to help provide winter gear for those who are out in the cold. If you have any of these items, we would appreciate a direct donation. If money is easier that's fine too.

Here's the link to our next Homeless summit. Gear can either be brought directly to the Summit or Dropped off with HomesNOW beforehand.

I see that you have a long way to go. Are you going to actively seek more donations or will money be returned if you do not meet your goal?

Our first home looks like it's going to be about $2000. After our donations hit that amount, you will see a video and story of our first homeless person who will no longer be homeless. Help make it happen faster.

One thing I can say though is that surprisingly very few people care about housing the homeless.

We are actively still seeking donations. Our main issue though is finding a piece of property or land to put the thing on. So far we have solar panels and battery pack for the tiny home. Once we reach our goal it gets built, simple as that.
