7th NYC Intersex Awareness Day!

Hi, I'm Claudia Astorino, an intersex activist based in NYC. (You may be familiar with some of my work on Autostraddle , Everyone Is Gay , or First Person PBS - nice to see ya again! *waves*)
Intersex Awareness Day (IAD) celebrates intersex people and raises awareness about intersex issues. It's celebrated on Oct 26th, marking the first public protest of intersex people in the US, in 1996. IAD is so important because we're living at a time when intersex people are largely unrecognized and misunderstood by societies globally - IAD helps us to bring much-needed visibility to our community!
I'm the proud co-founder and coordinator of the NYC IAD events, first begun in 2010. Prior to this date, no recognition of Intersex Awareness Day existed on the US’s east coast, and it is still the only annual east coast celebration of IAD! (Hard to believe, but true!) Keeping the NYC IAD events going is crucial for continuing to raise awareness for intersex people in the US.
This year, we have a fantastic event planned: "7th Annual NYC Intersex Awareness Day (with Georgiann Davis, Claudia Astorino, & Kristin Russo)!" Georgiann Davis , intersex person and sociologist, and I will be discussing her research from her book Contesting Intersex: The Dubious Diagnosis (2015), exploring how intersex people identify, how soceity conceptualizes intersex people, and how these different views inform medical "treatment" decisions for intersex people. Kristin Russo , of Everyone Is Gay and My Kid Is Gay , will also be talking about the importance of intersex inclusion and EIG's commitment to highlighting intersex voices! This event will be on Friday, Oct 21st, at Bluestockings Bookstore at 7pm.
We're so excited about this event. We just need a little help making it happen. That's where YOU come in!
We need some help getting Georgiann and Kristin to NYC and paying for costs they'll incur while here. We're raising $2400 to cover the costs of round-trip flights, hotel lodging (Georgiann only), food, & miscellaneous expenses for our presenters.
Any money we raise beyond the $2400 we're raising will go to great causes: 1/3 to future NYC IAD events, 1/3 to Everyone Is Gay to fund future LGBTQIA youth awesomeness, and 1/3 to The Astrea Lesbian Foundation for Justice's Intersex Human Rights Fund ! Astrea is the only granting agency in the US that specifically has grants for intersex activists, and we want to support them and their future grantees! Donate a bit extra if you can to support these great causes.
Any funders donating $5+ will receive a digital link to a taped recording of the event as thanks for supporting us! If you can attend the event - and we hope you can!! - this means you can watch later or share with others! For those that can't attend but would really love to, this also gives you an opportunity to be a part of it via the magic of the internet. Yay!
We're raising funds until Sep 21st, giving us one month to finish all event planning. Please give what you can to help us make this fabulous event a reality!
