Hummingbird Lane Market and Food Forest

For those who love farm and crafters markets, this is one where any local grower can sell their produce for free, where local independent artisans can showcase their products without paying commission or having to buy a table. And when you're done shopping, imagine walking under a pathway of overhanging trees and escaping for a while in a food forest. One where you can bring your children and they can experience the wonder of an edible landscape. One where they can walk and nibble at the same time, picking fruit, nuts and berries from all around them. One where you as a parent can grab a basket and fill it by donation. This is “Hummingbird Lane Market and Food Forest”.

I'm continually amazed at the coverage of obesity, diabetes and health disorders attributed to poor diet. But when a parent goes grocery shopping and is saddled with grocery bills that include $8 for a half dozen pears, or more for berries, apples, peaches..it's no wonder the aisles are stocked with highly subsidized prepackaged, high fat, high sugar, low value foods. And the plight for seniors is worse yet. In rural communities where there are small grocers if any at all, trips are infrequent. This encourages purchases of items with a long shelf life. So fresh fruits and vegetables get left out. And so does public health.

My name is Michael Kelley. I have a 5 acre, 250 year old homestead property in a small southern Nova Scotia community. I bought this land with a vision. Not only to return it to a working homestead for me and my two young kids, with crops, free ranging hens and animals, but to make it a community resource. I'm passionate about food security and the right of people to have access to healthy chemical free food for themselves and their families. I also believe that children should know where their food comes from and learn about community food security and chemical free and regenerative agricultural practices. This is where 'Hummingbird Lane' comes in. I will be turning the front of my property into a community food forest. Children will eat freely while they walk. Parents can grab a basket and fill it by an optional donation. There will be all types of tree fruits, nuts, berries, perennial vegetables and herbs, plus medicinal ground covers for teas, poultices, etc. It will use permaculture concepts to provide a low input, multi-yield resource for community members, visitors, tourists etc. Excess will be offered to local food banks and church food programs, and opportunities will exist for students to volunteer in the summer as part of their curriculum. This will be a demonstration/educational property as well as a local source for fresh food at a price anyone can afford...free.

I have the land. I have the vision, knowledge and energy to make it happen. But a forest without the trees is hardly a forest, and a market without tables and signage is hardly a market. I'm looking for $15,000 to purchase trees and edibles, and build tables and shelter for the free market. I will have a facebook page for the project, and all expenditures will be shown to donors with complete transparency. This is my vision. With a little help I can make it reality.
