Sheets Cat Adoptions Needs You

Donation protected
I'm Jennifer McCollum, "Adoption Lady" for Dr. Sheets and a long-time member of the animal rescue commuity in the Triad. The Sheets Pet Clinic’s cat adoption program has grown quickly, and we request donations from friends, former adopters, and loyal clients to keep it alive.  Sheets Cat Adoptions isn’t a nonprofit. Dr. Kimberly Sheets funds the program out-of-pocket, and the whole staff is the rescue team.

After an especially challenging year, we’re seriously “in the red.”  We must meet that deficit before 2016’s kitten season, which is just around the corner.

“Kitten season” in North Carolina seems to last longer these days – from the end of February to the beginning of December – and that’s one reason the adoption program has become expensive to maintain. But every time we match a healthy, well-socialized cat with a loving permanent family, it gives us that second wind to push on, even if it seems uphill.

Stats

In 2014 Sheets Cat Adoptions found homes for 134 homeless street cats, many of those sick, close to death. So far in 2015, we’ve found permanent, loving homes for 147.

Wild Thing, Adella, Iris and Booker

All cats that go through Sheets Cat Adoptions are spayed/neutered, tested age-appropriately for FIV and FeLV, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed – the usual. But Dr. Sheets often takes on cats with critical injuries who, once healed, can live quality lives.

She also accepts the challenges that neonatals and geriatric cats bring. Last year, we took in Wild Thing, a painfully matted and underweight 18-year-old cat who, once she got healthy, lived out the rest of her life in an adoptive home that she must have thought was paradise.

Dr. Sheets takes in kittens dying from so easily preventable issues: worm infestation, flea anemia, dehydration, starvation. Adella came into our program looking like a white tube sock with blue eyes. She has since transformed and has been adopted by kind people.

In 2014, three-week-old brother and sister Booker and Iris came to Sheets Pet Adoptions. Both kittens had genetic eye abnormalities.  Dr. Sheets examined them, saw how robust and thrifty they were otherwise, and accepted them into the program. Here's their story captured in video .

Our Adoption Incentive

In 2014 Dr. Sheets implemented an adoption incentive to stress the importance of providing cats preventive care in the form of annual wellness visits.

Every cat adopted from Sheets gets half-price vaccines for the rest of its life and discounted wellness visits in years when vaccines aren’t due if the adopters bring their cats in yearly. Even when adopters have established vets, we encourage them to take their cats to those vets annually, just as they would their dogs.

We debated raising the $75 adoption fee to offset the loss the adoptive incentive created, but decided against that because we want adoption fees to remain accessible.

The Story Behind the Logo

Every now and again, someone asks about the origin of Sheets Pet Clinic's logo. Here's the story: When Dr. Sheets opened her own veterinary hospital/low-cost spay/neuter clinic years ago, she based her logo on the well-known starfish story.

A man discourages a boy when he throws a beached starfish into the ocean because there are hundreds more ahead. “You can’t make a difference,” the man said. The boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. He said, “I made a difference for that one.”

The little girl in the logo is Dr. Sheets. Her childhood dream was to spay/neuter homeless cats and kittens, placing the ones she could in good homes. The multitude of stars in the sky are the many homeless animals worth reaching for. Dr. Sheets believes that if she reaches just one “star,” she has made a difference.

Our fundamental message at Sheets Pet Clinic is spay/neuter so one day there will be no homeless cats or dogs on the streets.

FAQ

What happens to the cats Sheets Cat Adoptions can’t find homes for?

They stay in the program until we find the right home.

Is my donation to Sheets Cat Adoptions tax-deductible?

Unfortunately, no. Sheets Cat Adoptions isn’t a nonprofit. At this time, Dr. Sheets funds the program out-of-pocket.

Can I sponsor an adoptable cat?

Yes! Just write [email redacted] for details.

Where does Sheets Cat Adoptions get their cats?

From long-time rescuers in the field who do TNR (trap-neuter-return). They pull cats/kittens that are social enough, or have the potential to become social enough, for adoption. Almost all Sheets cats started life on the streets. Quite a few come in with life-threatening injuries or illnesses. We tend to take on cats/kittens in desperate situations.

Does Sheets Cat Adoptions hold adoption fairs?

Yes! We hold fairs at the clinic on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, with the rare change in schedule for holidays. We hope to host other rescue groups at the clinic.

How do I see Sheets cats for adoption?

See them on our Petfinder page! And check our Facebook  page often. We often post photos of adoptable cats on Facebook before we post them on Petfinder, so adopters get a "sneak peek."

How do I apply for a Sheets cat?

Write [email redacted]. We’ll send you an application, then when it’s approved, the adoption coordinator sets up a meet-greet.

Can I volunteer for Sheets Cat Adoptions?

Yes! We are a small adoption program inside a busy veterinary clinic, but there are opportunities for volunteering at adoption fairs and as foster homes. Children and young adults under age 21 must be accompanied by an adult when volunteering. Please write [email redacted] if you’d like to learn more about volunteering.

Where are you located?

We’re at 809 Chimney Rock Court, Greensboro, NC, 27409.
