Our very good friends, Patrick Geers and Shahaira Janga, lost their business to arson. Dive Wederfoort is the oldest diving school in Curacao, having opened in 1955. Here is their story:
"Around 3:30 am we heard an alarm. We woke up immediately, looked outside our bedroom window and saw that there was fire at diving school Dive Wederfoort. We immediately called the emergency number and asked to send the fire brigade to Boca Sami. Our diving school was completely on fire!
When we looked closer, we saw that there was a lot of damage. The fire was already too big, so we could not intervene ourselves.
The scuba tanks were under pressure and exploded. The sound was so frightening that we had to call the emergency number again to ask where the fire brigade was.
We were told that they were already putting out "the car", to which I replied that it was not a car but our diving school. I also indicated that the scuba tanks were exploding and that they had to make haste.
Meanwhile, the fire became bigger and bigger.
Eventually the fire brigade arrived, but it was too late. Our diving school was completely burned down. Everything was completely gone within an hour.
All our work, energy and materials were gone in no time .....
We were not able to take out insurance. In the past there were a lot of burglaries and natural damage, so the insurance companies did not dare to insure us.
We have received a lot of support so far from our diving colleagues who temporarily lend us their gear and have given us the opportunity to dive at their location, until we can continue ourselves.
We are very moved by this event. Seeing all the reactions every day, really help us. We tear up, but it gives us the strength to go on.
We want to continue diving and ask your help to purchase new equipment."
"Rond 3:30 uur hoorden wij een alarm af gaan. Wij werden meteen wakker, keken uit ons slaapkamerraam en zagen dat er brand was bij duikschool Dive Wederfoort. We hadden meteen het alarmnummer gebeld en gevraagd om de brandweer naar Boca Sami te sturen. Ons duikschool stond volledig in brand!
Toen wij dichterbij gingen kijken, zagen wij dat er al veel schade was. De brand was al te groot, waardoor wij zelf niets konden doen.
De duikflessen stonden onder druk en ontploften. Het geluid was zo beangstigend, waardoor wij weer het alarmnummer hadden gebeld om te vragen waar de brandweer bleef.
Er werd ons aangegeven dat ze al bezig waren met het blussen van "de auto", waarbij ik antwoorde dat er het niet om een auto ging maar om onze duikschool. Ook gaf ik aan dat de duikflessen aan het ontploffen waren en dat er dus veel haast bij was.
Ondertussen werd het vuur steeds groter en groter.
Uiteindelijk kwamen de brandweerwagens, maar het was te laat. Ons duikschool was volledig afgebrand. Alles was binnen een uur helemaal weg.
Al ons werk, energie en materialen waren in een mum van tijd weg.....
Een verzekering afsluiten konden wij niet. In het verleden waren er veel inbraken en veel natuurschade, waardoor de verzekeringen het niet aandurfden.
We hebben tot nu toe veel steun gekregen van onze duikcollega's die ons hun spullen tijdelijk lenen en de mogelijkheid hebben gegeven om op hun locatie te duiken, totdat we zelf weer verder kunnen.
We zijn erg ontroert door deze gebeurtenis. Iedere dag doen alle reacties ons goed en moeten we een traantje laten, maar het geeft ons kracht om door te gaan.
We willen doorgaan met het duiken en vragen daarom uw hulp om nieuwe materiaal aan te schaffen."
