 MANSON, IA
Alexis is 15 from Manson, IA. She was born with normal hearing and vision but due to Autosomal Dominant Optic Atrophy + (an OPA1 genetic mutation) Alexis has lost her hearing & has had 2 cochlear implant surgeries. Alexis is now slowly losing her vision and is starting to have some balance problems. Her current vision without glasses is 20/600 and with glasses 20/50. Her dream is to travel the world before she can no longer see it.  Alexis along with her family have set up this gofundme campaign to help her travel and see as much as she can before she can no longer see it.

So far this campaign has helped Alexis travel to France where she got to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower, tour the Louvre, take a Seine river cruise, see Notre Dame, the Pont de Grenelle Statue of Liberty & the Arc de Triomphe, try a lot of french food, visit Disneyland Paris, enjoy French culture & much more.
She was able to travel to the U.K. Where she got to see the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, ride the London Eye, see the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Big Ben & Parliment, Enjoy some time in Hyde Park, take a Thames river cruise, ride on a double decker bus, tour Salisbury Cathedral, explore roman bath's and visit Stone Henge.
Soon she will be traveling to Germany for two weeks and in the future she hopes to visit Hawaii and see a volcano, travel to Iceland to see the Northern Lights & visit the blue lagoon, go to Ireland and see the Giant's Causeway, visit the colosseum in Rome. She also hopes to see Niagra Falls and New York City and much more.

Help us make her dream come true. Thank you!

I got my genetic test results back and it was negative for a mutation on the PMP22 gene, so the drs still aren't sure what causes my numbness. I also got a letter from cochlear this week saying after this year they will no longer support my implant (they won't make any replacement parts or anything) so I may have to upgrade. They have a new implant called the Kanso that only attaches to your head and nothing is on your ears-I think it looks pretty cool, I can't wait to check it out more.

On a positive note I get to go to Las Vegas & Hawaii soon!!! I'm so excited, I cannot wait! I will get to spend time on two if the islands and see volcanoes, waterfalls and spend time on the beach looking for sea shells (my fav!) A special Thank you to Allegiant Air & Polynesian Adventure Tours who are both helping make this trip happen :) I will post pics when I get back from the trip.

I totally forgot to update this-sorry! I got to go to Iceland & New York City! In Iceland the weather didn't cooperate so I didn't get to see the northern lights (it rained every day I was there) and a whale watching tour was canceled due to the wind but I got to do some totally cool stuff. I got to go to the Black Sand beach which was totally awesome! I got to climb some big rocks on the beach & I climbed halfway up a mountain before I decided to turn around (I didn't want to slip & fall -the ground was wet). I got to see the Skogafoss waterfall & visit Fakasel horse farm. I got to see a few sulfur hot springs which were really pretty but really stinky! I got to walk down where the North American & European tectonic places join. The Blue Lagoon was awesome but getting to go into Icelands longest glacier was the best!!! It was really snowing & blowing on the way back down the mountain and I learned that when they can't see they they drive by GPS.
After Spending a few days in Iceland I got to go to New York City :) The hotel in New York (Shoreham) had a welcome sign & balloons waiting for me in the lobby & more balloons in my room along with milk & cookies! In New York City I got to see the Statue of Liberty, radio city music hall & times square. I got to take a carriage ride through central park as well as go to the Central Park Zoo. I got to go Ice skating at Rockefeller Center & also go up to the top of the Empire State building. It was all a lot of fun! There are a few companies that were totally awesome & helped me stay warm in Iceland. They are Evergreen, Fjallraven, Seirus & Lands End. Seriously if you are looking for some quality presents for your friends & family this holiday season I highly suggest them-Everything I got was really well made and kept me warm & dry even in a big snowstorm on a glacier in Iceland!! The trip was organised by Adventure Girl Stef Michaels, who is awesome :) Thank you so much everyone for all of your support!!!

I went to the neurologist yesterday in Iowa City. They think my ulnar nerve is damaged and that is what is causing my finger tips to be numb. They say it will get better on it's own but that it will take time. Just have to keep wearing my elbow brace at night and be patient. They did some testing and my feet & ankles don't feel things like they should. With my leg and feet sometimes going numb they decided that they are going to do more genetic testing and will be looking at the PMP22 gene. So they took some blood & now we wait for the results. Not much else is new since my last update. I am loving my new contacts and have two cross country meets left before the season comes to an end.

Just a quick little update-I had an appointment yesterday with my pediatric ophthalmologist yesterday. It was a good/bad appointment, which was better than expected :) The bad news is that my vision got a little bit worse, but that was expected. I also learned that my visual reaction is a bit slower than before but my dr said that was expected as well. The good news (totally not expected) was they were able to find a glasses prescription for me that is supposed to correct my vision to 20/30!!! That will be a HUGE improvement in how well I can see & I hope the new prescription will actually improve my vision that much. I get to pick out new glasses tonight & will hopefully have them soon. I see my neurologist Oct 12th for my numb fingers & hopefully we can find out what is going on with that, it sounds like it could be a handful of things. I will also see a researcher that day-they are going to use my blood to do some research on my condition, hopefully it will someday lead to treatment or a cure.
Many of you know I am in Cross Country in my school-we had a meet on Monday & I did awesome! I came in 1st for my team on girls varsity :D I didn't quite make all of my goals but I was sooooo close! I run again Saturday morning & hope to keep improving to make my goal of running the 5k in 22 min 30 sec to beat my best time. I'm also hopefully going to be able to go to Iceland in the near future thanks to Adventure Girl, Stef Michaels! I'm getting so excited! That will be awesome!!!!!
That is about all that is new with me lately-I will post a pic when I get my new glasses & update after my Oct. appointment.
