Helping kids like us in Zimbabwe

Donation protected
This summer, our teacher Mrs. Massee went to Africa and visited the Mabale Primary School in the Hwange region of Zimbabwe.  She brought back a video (see bottom of this page for the full video) and photos of what it is like to go to school in Zimbabwe.    Now we have new pen pal friends in Zimbabwe!

We found out that the kindergarten buildings have no roof, windows or doors. We also found out that the students like to play basketball, volleyball and netball, but have no place to play.

Some of us students at Mojave Elementary School in Mojave CA took it upon ourselves to get together outside of school and start a fundraiser to help the Mabale School in Zimbabwe complete their kinder classrooms and build a ball court. We successfully raised some money at school but now we are raising money on GoFundMe to get all the funds we need to get our friends their completed classrooms and ball court.

Adult business:

Most of the work on the school is completed by volunteers.  To finish the kindergarten buildings, $500 is still needed for windows, doors and remaining parts of the roof.   During the past few months since we were there, some supplies have come in for the roof.  The wet season is now beginning and it would be great to finish off the buildings as soon as possible.

The cost for the play area is $7280.00.  The funds will be used for the concrete play surface, basketball hoops, volleyball and tennis nets, plus other sports related infrastructure.   They will be using the court for basketball, volleyball and netball, among other activities. The area has been cleared and is just awaiting the funds.

How the money gets to the school:

All of the proceeds will go directly to the Mother Africa Trust, a Zimbabwe local charity that supports the school.  Our funds are directed to only be used for the projects listed above.  The website for The Mother Africa Trust is at http://www.mother-africa.org/

On our way back from the school, we met with the founders of the trust, who also run a safari lodge near the school in the Hwange National Park region.   We were impressed with their desire to give back to the local community in a lasting and sustainable manner.

The kids from Mojave Elementary School would like to close with the following:

The kids and staff at Mabale Primary School were kind to our teacher and they let her make a video for us.  It was interesting for us to learn about a different country.   It was fun to compare and contrast our schools, and learn how we really are the same.

Even with our differences and distance between us, we realized that we have a lot in common with the kids at the Mabale School.    They have pets, like to play games, take tests and have dreams of what they want to be when they grow up.

They love school and we want to make learning easier for them.   Having a roof over their heads means they won’t get rained on or sprayed by an elephant!

Kindness is power and kindness fills you up inside and makes you feel proud and joyful.    Kindness spreads kindness.
