Black women are twice as likely to go into preterm labor and deliver a premature infant than white women in the US, and Austin Texas black women are on par with this statistic. Despite growing concern, there are no peer to peer pregnancy support programs available to African American women in the Greater Austin area, programs with proven success in prolonging pregnancy and helping women deliver full term infants.
I have been supporting supporting high risk pregnant women on prescribed pregnancy bedrest via Mamas on Bedrest & Beyond since 2009. Alone, this problem is too big for me to tackle-even here in Austin, where the African American population is a mere 7 percent of the total. So I am establishing a chapter of The Birthing Project, an internationally successful peer to peer support program for pregnant African and African American women in Austin. To get started and to train 20 "Sister Friends", I need $2500 to register Austin on The Birthing Project's "Underground Railroad to New Life".
I'd really appreciate your financial support. Black babies are being born too soon, too small and too sick to survive and something has to be done. Black women have supported one another in the past and its time we do it again-this time with tools and training to be most effective. Any dollar amount is appreciated. Thank you in advance for your support.
