“Battle for Brett -The Long Road”
Most people associated with speedway will know or remember Brett Saunders.
Brett spent some time with Sheffield, Middlesbrough and Berwick speedway teams in the UK in the 1980’s and 90’s. He was a long serving member of the Edinburgh Monarchs team from 1982 to 1992.
If you don’t know Brett I can tell you he is one of the most genuine and fun loving fellas you will ever meet.
Well Brett has had some misfortune in recent times and is doing it a bit tough at the moment.
Back on the 20th December 2017 Brett underwent an operation on his back to hopefully get rid of the back pain that he continually suffered......probably due to a few speedway crashes. The operation went well but then a few days into his recovery he had a rise in blood pressure and suffered a stroke.
He was in an induced coma for several weeks and is now in a rehab facility in Brisbane......with Wendy by his side.... trying to recover and learning to deal with the effects of the stroke.
After speaking with both Brett and Wendy and with their permission I am setting up a “Go Fund Me” account to help raise some much needed funds for the Saunders family to aid Brett’s recovery .
Brett has been told that his recovery could take up to a minimum of two years. During this time Brett will not be able to work. He will need ongoing physio and care and he will need to be supervised continually. And then there is the medication he will need.
Speaking to Brett and Wendy they stress that they feel uneasy about taking hand-outs but I’m sure you will all agree......they would be the first to do the same for us.
They both said they are concerned about losing what they have and for what they have worked so hard.
Brett did say that he missed Christmas so he can’t wait to get home and maybe have a quiet family Christmas in July with his family.
Wendy has been by his side throughout this whole ordeal so I’m sure she can’t wait to get home either.
These two are a great couple and with their kids Kirri and Joel they make a perfect Aussie family.
So in saying all this I would like all friends, family and acquaintances of Brett and Wendy, all speedway riders, supporters, promoters and managers both past and present from all over the world to dig deep and donate to show your support for Brett and Wendy.
We are aiming at this huge amount as this is a “Battle for Brett” and it’s going to be a “Long Road” to get somewhere near his old self.
Everyone PLEASE SHARE this post amongst the “Speedway Family”.........it is the best family ever and we are all a part of this family.
