The last year has been a tough for Zaire. They are preparing for crucial surgeries for their health and wellbeing. They have been told they cannot work during this time, so it is going to be very tough financially: the combination of medical bills, rent and utilities is overwhelming. They are doing everything they can do to support themselves at this time, including going through the highly invasive, and stressful process of applying for disability payments. All of this is taking a real toll on their health, and nothing is assured at this point.

One source of light for Zaire during these challenging times is their partner-in-crime and emotional support animal, Spikey. If you know Zaire, you probably know Spikey, too.  This devilishly cute little guy is always there for Zaire to take selfies with, eat treats with, and, of course, to support Zaire through their chronic pain and anxiety. A few months back, Spikey started showing signs of a vestibular disease, with dilated pupils and twitching eyes.  He’s okay now, but the incident left Zaire with close to $900 in vet bills. In 2 months, this bill will start to rack up interest.

All money raised will help keep Zaire afloat while they prepare for surgery and bring down Spikey’s vet bills. The uncertainty around their finances is causing considerable stress for Zaire, and it is time that we, as a community, step up in support. Please show up for Zaire and this  physically tiny but crucial component of their well-being: their son, Spikey!

Hey folks, Spikey’s original vet bill has been paid off. However, he’s an old man and as he ages more issues pop up. He has a heart murmur, which I learned a few days ago has begin to progress quicker than it has in years past. He needs to see a cardiologist ASAP and get a heart disease workup. I was able to cover the cost of his pain meds and a set of xrays to check for fluid around his lungs and heart with fundraiser funds but he still has labs he needs done before going to the cardiologist. In addition to Spikes care, I need pain injections for my knee again. At this point I am prioritizing Spikey’s care before mine, so until he’s taken care of, I will be in increasing pain. In addition to all of this, I have him scheduled for surgery in October, he absolutely needs to see a cardiologist before this so we know he’s safe to be put under anesthesia.

Hi y’all, posting because Zaire is in crisis mode at the moment. They were told that Spikey needs to see a cardiologist and have dental surgery within the next 3-6 months. Spikey has a heart murmur and the cardiologist has necessary diagnostics to perform. He also needs to have several teeth removed and the necessary meds for that surgery. The medical visits will cost a total of $1600. Please keep sharing and donating to help Spikey and Zaire out! ❤️

Hi all, just want to post an update here, because it’s been a minute. Zaire did end up participating in the inpatient program. They were hoping to rest and recover there, but instead they encountered staff who not only constantly misgendered them, but also asked their sex at birth multiple times. AND in addition to this transphobia, they found bed bugs at the hospital. So obviously Zaire left... and now their insurance refuses to cover the whole cost because they left early! An additional $750 was added to their bill, so I’m raising the goal to try to meet that. Thanks to everyone who’s donated and shared so far. Please continue!!
