If you are a parent, think back to eagerly preparing for your child after the announcement of pregnancy. You prepared a nursery, researched every car seat, washed and folded tiny clothes and probably chose an outfit that your new baby would come home in. Excitement continued to grow as the due date came closer. However, for some expecting parents, their babies never make it home from the hospital. Some babies are deceased upon birth.
That is where we come in. When a child is stillborn, the hospital whisks the child away from the parents quickly, without allowing the parents a proper good-bye. This can be an absolutely traumatic experience. The reason the staff takes the baby to the morgue soon following is because the babies’ little bodies are so fragile; they deteriorate quickly. The Cuddle Cot is making this tragedy a bit easier for parents. A Cuddle Cot is a refrigerated bassinet that staves off the decomposition process, giving the parents the gift of time. Thus giving the family time to grieve and time to say good-bye in the privacy of their hospital room. These bassinets are internationally encouraged by midwives, bereavement practitioners, and Psychology Today.
However, these bassinets are quite expensive, so that’s where you come in. A Cuddle Cot costs $3,000.00 per machine when purchased by a non-profit organization, much more if purchased by a hospital or other business entity. They are manufactured in England. Currently, only four hospitals in the state of Oregon have a Cuddle Cot in their facilities - Silverton Hospital, Providence Willamette Falls, Hillsboro Kaiser, and Salem Hospital. Our goal through this fundraiser is to put multiple Cuddle Cots in Providence St Vincent'sHospital, Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Oregon Health and Science University Hospital.
