Animal Shelters in Central America

Donation protected
From November 2015, to January of 2016, my boyfriend and I will be going on our first backpacking trip. We chose Central America because of the size and the diversity of nature in the area. As huge animal lovers, we hope to visit and volunteer at at least one animal shelter in each country we explore. Here's what we have so far:

Belize:
Caye Caulker Animal Shelter:

"Founded in 2005 with one mission...to rescue, attend to and help provide permanent homes for the 100's of dogs and cats that end up being abandoned on Caye Caulker. Kenrick Sampson operates a bicycle repair shop to fund the shelter."

Guatemala:
Animal Aware, Sumpango.

"[Their] mission is to reduce the suffering and improve the lives of domestic animals in Guatemala."

"[They] believe that, as well as being a direct benefit to the animals, enabling people to understand their pets and improve the way they look after them will bring about very positive social and cultural improvements for Guatemalan society in general." http://animalaware.org/en/

Unidos Para los Animales (United for Animals), Antigua.

"A small animal welfare group based out of La Antigua, Guatemala. They bring in lost, injured, and abandoned animals and nurture them back to physical and mental health. They treat, vaccinate, sterilize, and rehabilitate dogs and cats before placing them in loving homes."

Nicaragua:
Grenada Animal Outreach
Through the support of dedicated volunteers and donations, their goal is to end the suffering of stray and neglected dogs by having them placed in loving foster or adoptive homes. Though our primary focus is dog rescue, we hope for the day in which all the animals of Nicaragua are happy, healthy and safe.

Money donated will go towards helping animals like this in need.

Why Are We Doing This?
Just like with any region, opinions on animals are vastly different from our views in North America. We want to contribute to their continued efforts of saving hundreds of animals a year.
These small groups have like-minded views on the well-being of our companions. They are committed to giving these animals a better life. With each new volunteer experience, we plan to donate money towards these animals to further their well-being. Any money you are able to contribute is greatly appreciated, and we will stay in contact throughout our journey!

Is the Money Actually Making a Difference?
The shelters we are visiting are non-governmental, non-profit, charitable shelters (each site has "contact us" links for further inquisitions). As most of the shelters we visit will be in remote areas of each country, the funds they receive is minimal. All the funds they receive is put towards a healthier diet, vaccinations, surgeries, and a better living environment for the animals. Something as small as $1 can help go towards saving an animals life.

Note:
In 2011, I decided to adopt a dog from Egypt. I arranged a flight parent to transport her from Cairo to Vancouver, BC, Canada. I had countless people ask "Why from Egypt? We have tons of dogs in our shelters here". I explained to them that the way people in developing countries see "pets" is oh so different from how we see them in more developed countries. Some see them as pests that wander the streets, others serve as guard dogs or hunters, and the list goes on. The abuse seen to these animals is far more horrific as well; there was a case within a year after my adoption that the rescue (ESMA) received a cat that had had a firecracker lit in it's mouth. It survived thanks to the great work of volunteers and donators.

We want to help them make a difference, please help us help them.
