For the love of John

A CONCERT WILL BE HELD MARCH 24, 2019, AT 2 P.M. IN PEACE MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM IN MANHATTAN, KANSAS!

John Richard is a retired music teacher (24 years) in the Manhattan school district. John began playing music at the age of 12 and has shared his talents in multiple rock and country bands as a lead singer, drummer and bass guitar player. He has enjoyed substitute teaching in the district since his retirement and so enjoys sharing his gift of music with the students of USD 383.

Unfortunately cancer has once again interrupted John’s life and his love of teaching. John, his wife Sandy and his family are currently waging his third battle against a cancer called Multiple Myeloma.     Multiple myeloma is an uncommon blood cancer that affects the bone marrow, the body’s blood-forming system, and can lead to severe and debilitating bone pain and kidney problems.

John’s first fight began in May, 2000 at age 47 when shortly after the initial diagnosis; vertebrae broke in his back causing a compression of his spinal cord.  The cause was a tumor in the L1 that had caused the bone to become so brittle it just burst. John was air-lifted to Kansas University Medical Center and following a miracle surgery to repair his back, received radiation and chemotherapy, learned to walk again and went back home to Manhattan on the 4th of July!  John’s first Stem Cell transplant followed later that year. John and Sandy were grateful for 14 years of remission.

The cancer returned in the form of multiple bone lesions in October of 2014 and was managed again with chemotherapy and a 2nd Stem Cell transplant.

Now for the third time, in August of this year (2018) the Myeloma has attacked another vertebra and is causing severe nerve and bone pain. Chemotherapy began in September and John has just received radiation to help shrink the tumor in his vertebrae. Several cycles of chemotherapy remain. John and family are hopeful for a 3rd Stem Cell transplant sometime early in 2019. They feel incredibly blessed to be surrounded with the love and support of so many caring friends.

Thank You from the bottom of our hearts,

John and Sandy Richard and Family
