Thank you for taking a moment to review this campaign. The following is a description of the impetus for this campaign, an overview of the financial need, and additional ways to show your support.

THE REASON

Yvonne Smith and her 17-year-old son, Jalen, lost their home to a house fire that ignited the kitchen and spread throughout the home on the evening of Friday, November 2nd, 2018. (LINK TO NEWS STORY )

On the evening of the fire, Jalen jumped out of his bedroom window, quickly grabbed his neighbors and with help pulled his mother out of the home. Yvonne was rushed to the burn unit at Temple University where she is currently in a medically induced coma while she recovers from  2nd-degree burns that cover the upper half of her body. Jalen escaped the fire with a few cuts and is currently recovering from smoke inhalation.

While her friends and family are hopeful for a complete recovery, the journey will be long and arduous. The purpose of this Go Fund Me campaign is to collect donations, of any size, to help Yvonne and Jalen begin to rebuild. The following is a description of the expenses for which we are collecting donations.

THE NEED

Medical Expenses
Yvonne is a contract employee and does not have medical insurance. Due to the nature of Yvonne's burns, recovery and associated medical expenses are expected to be exorbitant. She will need pain management services, pharmacological intervention, rehabilitation, new glasses, and she may need surgery to restore some areas of her body that are particularly severe. Your donation will support Yvonne's journey to recovery.

Home Rehabilitation
The entry level of Yvonne's home, including the kitchen dining and living room,  were consumed by the fire. The second level of the home is covered in ash. Yvonne is a culinary enthusiast. All of her cooking supplies were demolished in the fire and what was left was tossed out on to the front lawn by the Fire Department. Your donation will support the domestic rehabilitation of Jalen and Yvonne’s home.

Basic Needs
The family's basic needs include clothing, such as school clothing for Jalen and work clothes for Yvonne. Other items that will be needed include hygiene and personal care items. They will need all of those items that we typically take for granted.

OTHER WAYS TO  SUPPORT

Lift up Jalen
Jalen is in his senior year of high school, he carries a 4.0 GPA, a passion for basketball and is excited about college. While supporting his mother's recovery, he will also be applying to college. All forms of support are welcomed to ensure Jalen knows he is supported while his number one cheerleader recovers.

Nourish the soul
"I came...I saw...I cooked" is the tagline of Yvonne's catering business. She was devoted to creating culinary experiences for her clients. During her recovery, let's surround Yvonne and her son with "good for your soul food". All food donations are welcomed.

Lend your hands
Shameka, Yvonne's sister, will be the primary caretaker while Yvonne recovers. Any words of encouragement or helping hands are welcomed.

Peace and blessings!

I am writing to share with everyone an update on my recovery. I'm making incredible progress. A month ago I was in a coma. Today, I'm out of the hospital, my tracheotomy is out, I can eat, my burns are healing, if the room is quiet enough, you can hear me talk, AND my eyebrows are coming back! Y'all can't tell me nothin'! God's hands are covering me. The protection and strength He has given me is fueling my recovery.

I want to thank you for keeping me and my family in your thoughts and prayers. I am beyond words. I know this time of year means different things to different people. But I think it's safe to say, that no matter your religion or spiritual beliefs, this is a time for love, reflection, celebration and rebirth. Love propelled me through the fire and I am emerging a better me.

My recovery has prompted me to reflect on my life, priorities and relationships. I am celebrating life and all the little things in it. I hope that you will as well. I will check in again soon.

With love,
Me

Dear, supporters:

I am happy to share with you another update from Auntie Nicole: "Hi Everyone! I just wanted to take a few moments to let everyone know that I was just discharged from the hospital last night and I am on the road to recovery. As I lie here, allowing my body to heal I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you to God first, for sparing my son (who is a fricking rockstar), keeping my family safe and giving me another chance at life. Thank you family, friends, clients, acquaintances, strangers & social media for your warm wishes, concerned phone calls, visits, heartfelt prayers and contributions. The amount of love and support that my family and I have received has been overwhelming and I appreciate each and everyone one of you. The holidays are coming and I would like to ask one more thing of you all. Please appreciate the life you have. Stop worrying about things and situations and bullcrap that don't matter. Appreciate all of the things and people in your life. Appreciate the fact that you can walk, speak, drink water!!! ( you have no idea what a blessing that is! Lol)..you have a roof over your head and people around you who love you. Followers and likes, material things and whatever else you think matters, does not. The Creator doesn't always give second chances, so please live and love your best life with the one you have now. I will update again soon. Love and light...patience and blessings... -Nicole"

Dear, Supporters:

I hope this message meets you in high spirits. I am writing to share with you a brief update. Auntie Yvonne is awake and she is in great spirits! She is unable to talk but she can write, walk slowly and text a joke. She asked me to share with you her love and gratitude along with a few of her thoughts:

"The world is an amazing place! It is full of beauty and love. This energy is healing me. This beauty and love is God. I try to remember this when I am sad or discouraged. I will not let the negative feelings take away my peace."

I am inspired by her strength and inspired by your generosity. From the depths of my spirit, thank you all for your support, prayers, and words of encouragement.

Also, I want to share a story that Sam Newhouse from Metro News published about the fire. You can read his story here:

Dear, supporters:

On Saturday when I visited Yvonne in the hospital, I read to her a story from a book that a good friend recommended called “Women Who Run With Wolves”. My aunt Yvonne loves to get lost in a good book. For this reason, I decided to start this book at her bedside. I imagined she could hear me although she was not awake.

The story I found myself reading aloud was about a mythical elder woman called La Loba. The sole work of La Loba is to collect and assemble bones. “When the last bone is in place and the beautiful white sculpture of the creature is laid out before her” La Loba sings the bones back to life. According to this myth, to sing means to descend into the deepest mood of great love and “breathe soul" into the one “in need of restoration”.

As I reflect on everyone who has donated and shared such loving and generous notes of support, I am reminded of La Loba. This community of supporters is La Loba. Your words and prayers are the revitalizing song. While I am deeply pained that I can not call Yvonne and tell her about all of your kind words, I am comforted by the lesson of La Loba and believe that she hears our collective song of restoration.

With love and gratitude,

Yvonne's niece, Sophia.
