This campaign has been organized by friends of Brian Thom and Family.

Brian Thom is recognized by family and friends as a person who is very loyal and very committed to helping others. Brian is known as a happy giving individual and a go-to-guy both at work and amongst his friends.

In mid- April of 2015 Brian was diagnosed with stage four cancer (bone, lung, liver). He endured 2 months of Chemotherapy that unfortunately was unsuccessful-Brian's cancer continued to advance.

Brian is continuing his fight with a new, very hopeful treatment called Immunotherapy.

This new treatment has brought new hope.  However this hope has come with enormous costs.

The purpose of this fundraising is to raise $29,000 to start and maintain Immunotherapy treatments for an initial period of 3-4 months. The treatment has had good success in the United Kingdom and the United States. As recent as June 2015, the treatment is being offered in the Province of BC and Brian is the first patient at his clinic to receive the treatment!

Many people have made inquiries as to how they can help Brian with his fight to recover. For those of us who know Brian, it's not a surprise that he has been reluctant to make an appeal to his community of friends and family. But now, with the new hope and the additional costs, the time has come to engage with friends and family in this appeal.

As a community we are blessed to have an opportunity to help Brian and his family with this journey. We are grateful so many people have reached out with their thoughts and prayers, and we now extend the invitation to please support Brian with the costs of his new treatment.

More About Brian

Brian is a loving husband and a model father of four children who has dedicated his life and career to helping others. Brian is a long-time staff member at BCIT and has recently been honored through a new award...

"Last Friday, during the School of Computing and Academic Studies and School of Health Sciences convocation ceremony, a new award was issued in honour of one of BCIT's most valued staff members. The inaugural Brian Thom Advancing Teaching Excellence Award recognizes an individual or group who has made an outstanding contribution to advancing learning and teaching at BCIT through educational innovation, and has been a champion for excellence in teaching beyond their own classroom.

It is no wonder that the institute selected long-time BCIT staff member, Brian Thom, to name the award after. In his 25 years in the Learning and Teaching Centre, Brian has made contributions that will have an impact for years to come.

In 2014, Brian received BCIT's Employee Excellence Award as the "Unsung Hero" and that epitomizes Brian's career as a caring, thoughtful educator who helps countless faculty and instructors improve how they teach at BCIT."

Please help in Brian's recovery efforts by donating today.

Spread the word and please share this post!

Together we can help, and we will make a difference to someone who has made a difference in so many of our lives.

Thank you.

Update July 27, 2015

Once again I want to thank you all so much, but there just don’t seem to be adequate words to express how I feel. I find it so hard to believe that so much money has been donated by so many people in such a short time. THANK YOU ALL.
I have now had two treatments with the new drug and can start to see a pattern of the side effects. The first week is generally rough, although nothing like chemo, and I sleep through most of it. After about a week and a half I start to feel a bit stronger and in the third week I actually get bored and restless and want to start doing something. The stonework will still have to wait a while longer though
While I have the strength we have decided to try a family vacation to the cabin near 100 Mile House. The pain medication is doing its job so I’m confident I can make the trip and once we are there the forest is so rejuvenating and healing. I was advised by several doctors to do the things I love when I have energy for it, don’t wait. I am going to take that advice.
The next treatment is Aug. 7 so I will be back hopefully well rested for that. I can’t explain why but I am sure that the Keytruda is having a positive result and I have lots of hope for the future. Thank you all again for your warm wishes and prayers. I am overwhelmed and feel surrounded by your support.

July 14 UpdateI From: Brian Thom

I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all of your contributions. My family and I (Trish, Jeremy, Michael/Chili, Kevin and Maya) are absolutely overwhelmed with your generosity!

When I received the diagnosis in April I was naturally devastated. The Cancer Agency estimated that with chemotherapy I might have a year, without it, just a few months. I had two chemo treatments that were brutal; so hard on the body and mind. Unfortunately they didn’t work and the disease was still progressing so they discontinued the treatments. The Agency had nothing else to offer other than palliative pain management.

After exploring several alternatives we connected with an Oncologist at Lions Gate Hospital who told us about a new drug that was proving successful in the UK called Keytruda.

The next day after that meeting the drug was approved for use in Canada on a limited, self-pay basis. I agreed to start the treatment and had my first infusion on June 23. The side effects were minimal compared to chemo.

My second infusion will be tomorrow and they occur every 3 weeks. The drug is so new here that it has to be mixed in Toronto the day before and flown out to the private clinic where it is administered. Hopefully the second treatment goes as smoothly as the first.

Some trials are showing 50 – 60% or higher success rates compared to the 5 year survival rate with chemo of 2%.

Thanks to the generosity of all of you; family members, dear friends, colleagues and many whom I don’t even know, I have the opportunity to participate in this new treatment.

My family and I are very optimistic and I might get to be a husband, father and grandfather for a lot longer!

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN!
Brian Thom
