Don't Quit

Hi! My name is Jennifer Gray and mental health awareness is important to me. Every year over 42,773 Americans commit suicide and for every suicide there are at least 25 attempted suicides making it the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. There have been times in my life I’ve wanted to give up, but I’ve depended on my faith, family and friends to get me through. My passion and drive to help others has kept me going. I want to create a statement to others that even when you feel alone - when you feel like you just can’t keep going - that you have the strength in you not just survive, but to thrive.

In 2013 my mother committed suicide. Like so many others, this wasn’t her first attempt. Unlike many, she sought out help. She saw therapists and psychiatrists as she worked to combat depression Still after 15 years of therapy, medication, and even ECT (Electroconvulsive therapy) the disease consumed her. I witnessed years of her trying to stay strong yet in end depression consumed her.

Psychiatrists tell us that treatment does not help 10% percent of clinically depressed people. My mother was one of them. Looking back now, I am no longer willing to accept that as an answer.

Everyone knows someone who is suffering or has suffered from mental health issues. Clinical conditions like depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder still carry a significant stigma when it’s time for us to discuss them. Many other disorders are now openly discussed, including PTSD, PostPartum depression, and anxiety and yet it is still not enough.

It’s time to take a stand for our loved ones. It’s time to stand up for those suffering alone.

That’s why I am creating "Don't Quit... You Are Not Alone," dedicated to bringing mental health awareness in the community. This Half Marathon/5k, slated for October 7, 2017 in Dallas, will bring together mind, body and art in a never-before-seen event. It’s the first Mental Health Awareness Half Marathon EVER for Dallas/Fort Worth.

Almost anyone can run, just like anyone can suffer from depression. No matter how young, old, big, or small, the marathon is a metaphor for overcoming mental health conditions. I compare running to life - when you want to give up you keep going. Just like in life - when you want to quit, when it's too hard you have a choice, you quit or you keep going.

Let’s take a stand for those that are hurting. Let’s take a stand for those that cannot speak for themselves. Now is the time to take a stand for those that feel alone and don’t know where to turn.

I am asking for your financial support. No matter how big or small your donation, it will help build this this opportunity to raise public awareness about mental health in a positive and supportive way. Your donations will go toward planning and execution of the event with proceeds benefitting the National Association of Mental Illness foundation, Dallas chapter.
