Yoga Props for Khed School

Donation protected
We are raising funds to purchase Yoga equipment for the dedicated young yogis of Khed (a small town in Maharashtra).

We have been in Khed for the past week, where we spent time with a yoga teacher, Mangesh, and his students, who are aged between 6 and 22. Mangesh is an English teacher (aged 29) at the Rotary English Medium School, and after a day of teaching as an English teacher, he teaches yoga to interested students at the school from 4pm-8pm, Monday to Friday. Most of these children are from very poor backgrounds and he trains them for the National Yoga Championships. If they win a medal at a national championship, it usually ensures they get a government job when they leave school (and a government job is a high aspiration for a village child).

The work Mangesh is doing with his yoga students is truly inspiring. Each student has their own routine and he gives them a lot of personal time and instruction. We’ve never seen children so focused and dedicated in a yoga class, and his classes go for 4 hours! He works 12 hour days in the hope that he can offer his students a way out of the poverty and overcome the lack of opportunity that is so oppressive for people living in rural areas in India.

Mangesh and his students helped us tremendously in recreating some of the āsanas of an 18th century Haṭhayoga text. In fact, the postures were extreme and at the end range of their capacity. They behaved like true professionals and put in 110% to pull off some extraordinary feats of bodily mastery (see attached photo of Pawan Chikhale practising the 18th century Haṃsāsana)!

Pawan is 14 years old and his father is a shop keeper that sells toys. He comes everyday to yoga after school and hopes to represent his school at the National Yoga Championships.

In an effort to help Mangesh, we’ve offered to buy some proper equipment for the children (who are using bits of foam as yoga mats, etc.). We are hoping to get regular yoga mats donated, so I've asked him to provide a quote for the gym style mats he requires to do the more extreme āsana (including aerial and rope yoga).

His request is for one stunt mat (INR 22,500.00) and fifteen practise quality gym mats (INR 2,000.00 each).

The total amount is be INR 52,500 (which is approx. £580).

We are attempting to help raise funds to subsidise this purchase.

Your generosity and kindness will have an immediate impact.

Thank you so much!

Deep bow,

Jacqui and Jason
