We are a Swedish family with three children, living in Brussels Belgium. We love to travel to Sri Lanka because of the gentle friendliness of the people and the peaceful culture.

On our last trip we met Shanti, and our lives changed. We became painfully aware of how hard life can be and how good our own situation is.

Shanti is 45 years old and makes a living from selling pineapples at the beach in Hikkaduwa. She looks much older, because she only has two teeth left. She shows them often though, because she is a very gentle soul and smiles a lot. Shanti's parents were poor, and going to school in Sri Lanka is expensive, so she never got a chance to learn to read and write. Bright as she is, she learned English on her own.

Shanti has four children between 9 and 16, and she is struggling to support them and put them through school. They eat rice and lentils, meat is a luxury. Her income is next to nothing for a family that size.

Shanti's husband passed away six years ago and she is left alone with the full responsibility of the family. The family is very vulnerable, not only because of her limited income, but because they don't have the safety of a decent roof over their heads. Their shack is literally coming apart and it rains through all holes in the roof and walls.

Shanti works very hard, and she didn't get many chances in life. But if this crowdfunding succeeds, together we can at least break the vicious circle of poverty for her kids and give them the safety of a home and hope for the future.

I am not expecting miracles, but the amount we aim for is what local craftsmen told her it would cost to build a simple house.

A very small contribution from many of us can make a profound change in this family's life, and we as donors get the satisfaction of helping to make the world a slightly better place.

Please help! No matter how small, your contribution is warmly welcome!

I finally got to visit Shanthi in her new house last week, and I want you to know what a tremendous difference we have made, not only to her life, but to so many more people! I also wanted to share some pictures with you. You can feel really good about yourself having made this happen!

Shanthi now has a safe, sturdy and very nice little house, on a small piece of land that she owns, so it will be passed on to her children one day.

A neighbouring family has recently lost their mother to cancer and live in a wooden shack with a roof made of banana leaves. When a coconut went through the roof and destroyed it, Shanthi started to take them in at night, so now an additional three children stay with her at night.

They are still poor, but her children have hope and they all have a safe place to stay now. We have had a huge impact on these people's lives. I would like to give a special thanks to Ubbe for leading the construction works, he did an amazing job.

So once again thank you all! We did a really good thing!

Final update - Shanti's house is now finalised.

Shanti and her children have now moved into a brand new, functional house that we all together provided for them! Urban even managed to stretch the funds to drain pipes as you can see from the pictures!

Apart from the obvious heartfelt thank you to all of you - without you this would have never been possible - I would like to direct a very special thanks to Urban, who took on this task with all of his energy and competence. That really made all the difference!

In fact, Urban did such a good job that there was a small fraction of funds leftover. I want you to know that we have donated that to our Norwegian and Sri Lankan friends who started a project in Hikkaduwa.

Check out www.NewUse.org or visit their shop if you go to Hikkaduwa!

They also do crowdfunding and are currently trying to help another woman to a decent house, so you should know that you are also helping another family with children in dire need!

This has been a great experience and I am deeply thankful to you all for participating in this project!
Live well!

Many of you have been asking for an update lately, which I fully understand! Things have slowed down significantly recently, as the house is almost finalised. It's a bit unclear why they don't manage to finalise it completely, which shouldn't take much, as you can see from the photo.

Urban keeps following the project and is resisting all kinds of pressure from the builder in order to put the money to the best use possible until the very end.

Did you enjoy building a house for Shanti? Guess what, there is another woman in the same village who lives in something I would call a dump, rather than a house, struggling to make ends meet. Our Norwegian friends in Hikkaduwa are now trying to raise the funds necessary to help Ramani. If you're not keen on participating in yet another project, perhaps you would consider spreading the word? That means everything!
Thank you all for helping Shanti! I hope to be back with photos of a finalised home soon!

One more step closer to finished!

The walls are now being plastered and doors and windows have arrived. Shanti and her children will probably be able to move in next week or so!

The builders are notoriously correcting their calculations, and all of a sudden now more cement is needed.

Without the late donations we have received - thank you so much! - we wouldn't be able to finalise the works, so that means everything! Don't hesitate to continue spreading the word! A very kind friend posted the campaign on his FB wall giving it his recommendations, which resulted in new donations, so please consider doing that!

I guess anyone who had a house built, or had works done, can relate to the end costs always being higher than initially expected. Things seem to be exactly the same all over the world...

But we got this far, and that is a miracle! Together, we all have managed to change this family's life forever.

Another piece of good news is that a group of Norwegians and Sri Lankans have started an initiative in Hikkaduwa, and might be able to help Shanti get some work. Remains to be seen what will come out of this concretely, but these lovely people have offered their help! Visit them here:

When people who care come together to do some good we can move mountains! Thanks to all you movers!
More updates to come until the day she moves in!
