A safe house for Shanti

We are a Swedish family with three children, living in Brussels Belgium. We love to travel to Sri Lanka because of the gentle friendliness of the people and the peaceful culture.
On our last trip we met Shanti, and our lives changed. We became painfully aware of how hard life can be and how good our own situation is.
Shanti is 45 years old and makes a living from selling pineapples at the beach in Hikkaduwa. She looks much older, because she only has two teeth left. She shows them often though, because she is a very gentle soul and smiles a lot. Shanti's parents were poor, and going to school in Sri Lanka is expensive, so she never got a chance to learn to read and write. Bright as she is, she learned English on her own.
Shanti has four children between 9 and 16, and she is struggling to support them and put them through school. They eat rice and lentils, meat is a luxury. Her income is next to nothing for a family that size.
Shanti's husband passed away six years ago and she is left alone with the full responsibility of the family. The family is very vulnerable, not only because of her limited income, but because they don't have the safety of a decent roof over their heads. Their shack is literally coming apart and it rains through all holes in the roof and walls.
Shanti works very hard, and she didn't get many chances in life. But if this crowdfunding succeeds, together we can at least break the vicious circle of poverty for her kids and give them the safety of a home and hope for the future.
I am not expecting miracles, but the amount we aim for is what local craftsmen told her it would cost to build a simple house.
A very small contribution from many of us can make a profound change in this family's life, and we as donors get the satisfaction of helping to make the world a slightly better place.
