 ELLENVILLE, NY
Tragedy has struck our Middletown school family. For those of you who know her, Elizabeth Deaver is a fiercely loyal and loving mom of three wonderful boys, Joshua, and Andrew Stevens, and her oldest, Daniel, who just graduated from MHS. Liz volunteered many hours at Chorley School between her paid jobs, before obtaining a position as an aide at Presidential Park School. She has just learned that her son Andrew has been diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma and is presently in the hospital at Westchester. Liz is going to need all of our help to make sure her bills and day to day expenses are taken care of so that she can be where she needs to be, by Andrew's side, as he begins his battle. Even if you do not know Liz or her boys, we all know someone that has been touched by this insidious disease. When cancer strikes a young child it is that much more devastating. Any amount that you can donate is sure to be accepted with sincere gratitude. Please consider contributing and help this wonderful mom help her son win his fight against cancer! Thank you so very much!

I was so happy to finally visit with Andrew and his mom yesterday and to bring his brothers as well. . Liz’s sudden fight to hold back tears as she told Josh and Daniel to sanitize their hands before entering Andrew’s hospital room didn’t go unnoticed. At first glance it appeared to me that Andrew looked tan and I feared he might be jaundiced. Liz explained to me that this was a “chemo burn, “ yet one more devastating effect cancer patients must endure, particularly pediatric cancer patients who are treated with adult medicines. As a result of the very harsh chemos Andrew received prior to stem cell transplant, his body actually looked like he had a sunburn and his skin even peeled. The amazing staff at Maria Fareri's Children's Hospital were able to get Liz an excellent cream from the burn center which helped a lot. Andrew’s lips were chapped and due to the mucositis, an extreme form of thrush that makes very painful sores in the mouth, throat and the entire digestive tract, Andrew has not been able to eat or drink in over a week. As this also caused him to continually throw up his NG tube which delivered liquid food, his only form of sustenance has been intravenously. Somehow this has managed to keep his weight above 50 pounds. Yes, 12 years old and only weighing 50 pounds. The sores in his mouth didn’t keep Andrew from yelling at his little brother Josh, who, starved for attention, kept antagonizing Andrew, pounding on the piano in his room and wanting to play with Andrew’s iPad and tv remote. Andrew did get back at him though when he threw things at him like an empty tissue box or legos, or squirted him with the saline syringe he got from the nurse which was supposed to be used for his mouth. :) I was also very happy to see a smile cross Andrew’s face when he saw all the beautiful cards many students from the Middletown elementary schools made for him and when between the two of us, we were able to log him into his edelements account on the chromebook he had won at a tricky tray event. Andrew is so anxious to engage in academic learning tasks as he has missed an entire year of school. His big brother Daniel mostly watched on quietly. He continues to be an incredible strength and source of comfort for his mom as he plays the role of Mr. Mom at home while Liz sits vigil by Andrew’s side. The word stoic has taken on a whole new meaning as I observe the incredible strength and courage Andrew exhibits in his fight against this horrible disease. As the around the clock morphine Andrew had been receiving seemed to be the culprit for his drop in oxygen levels, Andrew has been very hesitant to request any. He finally gave in and took a dose while I was there due to pain from his mouth sores. It is a travesty that young patients like Andrew have to suffer from these adult treatment protocols. But, on a happy note, the doctors have said as soon as Andrew starts eating and drinking on his own he will be able to go home, hopefully by the end of July, beginning of August. At that time it is the hope that Andrew will be in full remission, and other than getting his leg straightened and the updated scans and blood work that are sure to follow, he and his family can get back to living their lives with some normalcy. Your continued prayers and financial donations are still needed and very much appreciated.
