Black Goat Sanctuary is a registered non - profit organization with the mission of providing a safe and loving forever home for abandoned , abused and neglected farm animals.
Recently we were made aware of a heart breaking case. This cow - born completely blind - has been used by the dairy industry for 12 years . For over a decade this cow has been treated as a commodity . After 12 years her body grew tired and she couldn’t make enough milk. She was going to be sent to the slaughter house the evening she came to us. Her whole life until this point was spent indoors in a stanchion - with a collar on her neck and a chain attached to that. She could lay down and stand up... that is it. Her legs are weak from never being allowed to move around and her body is tired. We think they this girl deserves the best now that she is finally liberated.
With all funds raised, we will fence in a 2 acre area for her and the two babies who have also been saved from the dairy industry. They will live their days here - in peace. We will have a nice shelter made for them that will keep them out of any elements when they are in their field . We are determined to help this poor girl as much as we can and ensure that she enjoys her golden years .
After initial vet checks our vet has determined that our girl indeed 100% blind. Her eyes do appear to bulge out a bit which could be a sign of a mass growing but no lymph nodes were enlarged - this is a positive sign. She is happy , eating, drinking and alive. She needs to build her muscles up since she has been unable to move her whole life - once she is outdoors this shouldn’t take too long! In the meantime we will take her out a few times a day to stretch. She has swellings in her legs from constantly hitting them on the concrete surrounding her - it is not causing her any pain thankfully. Our vet said she can certainly live a long and healthy life ! We currently need to lubricate her eyes 2-3x a day to keep them from drying out and becoming itchy but as it stands her quality of life stands to be quite high.
