My sister-in-law, Amanda Coleman, lost her valient 9-month battle with cancer a week ago.  Amanda, only 36 years old, was the loving mother of Lilah (4), Kieran (3) and Luke (18 mos).

Diagnosed with advanced melanoma last October, Amanda immediately began treatments, with her main concern always the well being of her three children. Along with radiation and immunotherapy treatments, Amanda also had open heart surgery, followed 3 weeks later by the removal of her cancer ridden femur.  She never complained.

Aside from babysitting, my brother Rich has never asked for help.  In the past few days he has assured me he and his family will be fine.  Many have asked to help, but he has brushed them aside.

Without his knowledge, I hope to raise $15,000 per child to put towards opening a 529 fund for their future college education.

At Note of Thanks and Gratitude from the Coleman Family

On behalf of myself, Lilah, Kieran and Luke we would like to thank all of those who have helped our family over the last year. We are so lucky that the number of people to thank is so overwhelming that I am sending out this “general” letter. I apologize that it has taken so long to thank all of you that supported us through prayers, well wishes, donations to the Go Fund Me campaign, donations to Hospice of Orange County and all of the other ways so many showed their love for Amanda and our family. I finally realized I was delaying saying “thank you” as it also meant saying goodbye to Amanda.

While there are so many special people to thank I will not name them all and I hope I have expressed my gratitude to them already. But I do want to thank my brother Pete who put together the Go Fund Me campaign and wrote such an amazing tribute to Amanda. Thanks to his initiative, the support of family, friends, Amanda’s co-workers, the Minisink community and even strangers Lilah, Kieran and Luke have an amazing start to their college fund! I found out about the campaign about a day into it and was moved beyond words at the outpouring of support. I cannot properly express our gratitude as thank you is not enough.

As my brother stated, throughout her entire fight against cancer Amanda never complained and her children were her primary concern. In fact, Amanda never complained. Most people would never know that all of her pregnancies and deliveries were especially tough, or that she lived with terrible pain long before her diagnosis. That was because Amanda was always thinking of others before herself. Because of this, during the last months of her life, I would wonder if people know what a special person she was? I am sure she hated me thinking that since that’s the last thing she would ever be concerned with!! But in our 17 years together I learned so much about life by just watching how she lived hers. By the love and support we received I was quickly comforted to see that so many knew how special she was.

Most importantly, Lilah, Kieran and Luke are doing great! They are amazing children, a daily tribute to their Mom, and inspiration to me. They start their day saying “Good morning Mommy Angel” and end the day with “Good night Mommy Angel.” It’s amazing how many times when we are out shopping a salesperson or nice stranger will say something like “ah Mommy has the day off?” and the kids will answer right away “no, our Mommy is an Angel.” I was amazed when soon after Amanda passed Kieran asked Lilah if “Mommy Angel comes to school with them?” and Lilah answered “yes, she’s here, there and everywhere.” She is right!

Again, thank you all so much! We are forever grateful!

Rich, Lilah, Kieran and Luke

Wow...what a day! Due to the generosity of so many, those I know and others I never met, we reached our goal in just under 24 hours! I think that is a tribute to Amanda and how she and Rich touched our lives.

I have increased the goal to $45,000 as people are still contacting me. It is truly humbling and words cannot express the debt of gratitude I have to you all! God bless.
