Glenmount School's New Playground

Imagine an elementary school without a playground, a day without fresh air, and a kindergartner stuck in a classroom all day. That is Glenmount Elementary Middle School, a Baltimore City public school in Northeast Baltimore City that serves 635 students. The programs and resources that we loved in our schools are absent in this school. There is no functional playground (one lone bouncy horse and one slide), no required recess, no music, very limited art classes, limited technology classes, and gym class only available one quarter of the school year.
Our children need a new playground that helps them thrive, learn, and develop life long –learning. They must have opportunities for play that build children’s imagination, teamwork, creativity, and independence. In addition, play promotes physical activity, reduces obesity, and improves cognitive functioning. A high-quality recess program can help students feel more engaged, safer, and positive about the school day, according to Stanford research. The principal, has stated that with the new playground, recess will again be part of the school day.
Our PTA applied for and received a grant from KaBOOM!for a playground. The CarMax Foundation is the funder. We are seeking donations to help with the cost of the new playground. We need to raise $8,500 for the required match of the KaBOOM! grant. In addition, we need funds for outdoor safety lights, general safety improvments, and play and gym equipment for our school. Our goal is a total of $10,000.
