Severus the Kitty Needs Help
Back in January of 2012, I was given a very special cat. I was not aware on the day that I received him that he was meant to be a coping mechinism for me. You see, my aunt knew that the following day would be when I was told that my father was diagnosed and dying of stage four cancer. He was meant to be my therapy. My father only lived a few short weeks after that, but this special cat (Severus) did exactly what he was meant to. He was my pillow to cry on, my shoulder to lean on and everything in between. He became my life. He also had diabetes, requiring two shots of insulin a day. This was huge for me, since it meant I had to care for another life. It worked wonders in dragging me out of my depression.
Then last fall I decided to leave Alabama and go to California for my brother's wedding. Little did I know that I would fall so in love with the place that I would decide to stay, with only my two suitcases! After a couple of months, I was able to have my Severus shipped out to me by a pet courier service. The reunion was greater than that of Pippin and Merry at Minas Tirith!
However, things took a bad turn a short while ago. Severus began having seizures and his blood sugar was dropping to unheard of levels. That's where we are now, in a place where we can't get his sugar levels to even out. One day it's too low to fathom, the next it's higher than you'd think possible. During this time he has also stopped eating and has to be force fed every hour.
This is where I need help. He is the world to me and I would do anything for him - to get him better, to make him feel better. But his vet bills are mounting daily. He is in and out more than Prince Oberyn at a brothel! And we are still not even sure what's causing his blood sugar to fluctuate so erratically!
I don't expect to see the full funds met, but even a few dollars would help. Moving across the country has entirely depleted my monies at this point.
Basically, if I were Link, Severus would be the thing it would be dangerous for me to go without. Especially in this new, foreign territory...he's all I have.
Also, the wonderful Jess of Lucky 13 Lacquer is offering exclusive discount codes to those who donate! Donations of $5 or more will receive a one-time coupon code for 10% off their entire order, and those who donate $20 or more will receive a one-time code for 20% off of their entire order. The only exclusion from the codes would be the charity polishes on Lucky 13 Lacquer's site.
Whether or not you can donate to the cause, please be sure to hug your fur baby tight tonight. <3
Thank you for taking the time to read this,
Severus went in for his update exam this morning, the main prerogative being the need to check his glucose levels after withholding his insulin for one week. The news was good! After seven days without insulin, he is still maintaining a healthy blood glucose level!
This led to the vet asking me if I wanted to run his blood levels, to find out 1) If his diabetes has gone away, 2) If so, why is he still not eating?
I went ahead and gave the go ahead for those tests to be run. Not gonna lie, it was hard for this kitty mama to watch so much blood being drawn from his JUGULAR! So grateful that my friend was there with me!
After a bit of a wait, it was confirmed: SEVERUS NO LONGER HAS DIABETES! SUCH HUGE, AWESOME NEWS!
After the initial celebration, we needed to buckle down and look at everything, to try to see why he is still so sick. If not the diabetes, then what?
After the doctor spent some time comparing his levels, she deemed that he is highly, HIGHLY anemic! His red blood counts are scary low! So getting his iron levels up is the top priority right now.
While in the process of trying to give him a pill, he vomited...which showed us not only that he has some hairballs, but that he also has several ulcers in his mouth. Both of which are things that would contribute to his lack of eating! Who knew that a vomiting kitty could be such a good thing!
So what do we know? No more diabetes. Hairballs that are affecting his appetite. Mouth ulcers that cause pain when he's trying to eat. Severe anemia.
The great thing here is that all of those things are treatable, and highly so! It just seems like a bunch of little things all happened at once to his poor little body, but we are now aware of everything and can thus begin making him feel truly better. <3
The addition of his tests today caused his bill to go up a fair amount. For that reason, I have risen the goal of this fundraiser. I am still so in awe and so humbled by all of these donations, so I hope that me raising the goal in no way makes it come across as me being ungrateful. <3
Again, every dollar and every share of this page makes a HUGE difference!
We finally know what's wrong with my baby boy, and even better, we know how to fix him!
With every bit of love and happiness in my being, THANK YOU!!!! <3 Thank you all SO MUCH! <3
He is still not eating as much as any of us would like, BUT he is eating freely!
I am still withholding his insulin until his next appointment, this Thursday morning. With any luck, he will still be testing normal then!
I can't tell you how scared I was that I was going to lose him, it was such a terrifying while. And even though he's still not out of the woods, there's a whole lot more hope for him to pull out of this ugly mess!
To every last one of you who has donated and shared this page, thank you SO much! No matter the amount, every dollar has helped and is continuing to help pay for his mounting bills.
Just as the Dothraki have no word for "Thank You", I have no word to show the true amount of my gratitude. Because thank you simply isn't enough.
Please continue to share and donate to this page as you are able, as every last bit is making a difference now. <3
Another plus is that, with the drought here in California, no fireworks were allowed in the area. So he didn't have to go through the added stress of thinking that the world was ending!
I am still so overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and donations thus far. Because of your generosity, I will be able to keep fighting for Sev's health. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!!!
I'll have a new update tomorrow as soon as I get back home from the vet's office.
Please continue to share this page. <3
As an added bonus, here's Severus trying to figure out how he feels about horses.
He is currently home with me right meow, where I get to keep him for four whole days! Barring any unforeseen health issues. The vet has told me not to give him his insulin during this time so that we may try to figure out how much he needs now to properly manage his sugar levels.
The biggest news here is that he is EATING! This morning he ate half a can of cat food on his own, no force!
When he goes back in next, we will hopefully know a proper insulin level to give him, and I also hope to see that he's regained some of this weight that he lost!
Again, to all who have donated and/or shared this page, it means the world to me that you care. Severus is all I have, and because of you I am going to be able to see him well again.
Please keep the donations and shares coming!
