More Loot at The Loot Room

Donation protected
The Loot Room is a social space and community hangout which has it's humble beginnings in the boardgame collections of three friends from Logan City, QLD. With a small handful of money and a large headful of dreams, Jackie, Josh and Greg  opened the doors in January 2015. In the time since we have gone from strength to strength with boardgame meetups, trivia nights, RPG groups and reintroducing the game Dragon Dice to Australia.

The beginning of this year threw us a massive curve ball with serious medical issues arrising which have impacted on our ability to keep operating as a hobby (non-profit) business only. With ongoing medical treatment for the rest of this year, we are no longer able to balance being open 27 hours a week as well as having to earn income via other means. If we open less hours we cannot pay the rent. This means that our only way forward is to turn it into an actual income source or, be forced into a hiatus until we have the time and capital to dedicate to it as a hobby again.

Our vision is to expand the community and range of activities at The Loot Room, drawing together different interests into a common social space. We want to foster a cross-pollination of knowledge and skills between both hobbiests and entrepenuers though face-to-face connections. Starting (or expanding) a business requires capital though and, with most of our resources being tied up in other aspects of life right now we must fall back on asking the broader community for assistance. In helping raise these funds you will play a key role in keeping this space open for you to continue to enjoy with your friends.

So what will we actually do with your donation?

- Operate the premises as a co-working/study space from 9am till 5pm weekedays with a view to bring in digital and physical games designers. This means wi-fi for all and may include fitting out with monitors which can be also used for LAN gaming at other times. The space isn't just limited to game-related business though, anyone is welcome to come on board. We are ideally located half way between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, only 2km from the M1, and in close proximity to Griffith Uni Logan Campus and Logan Tafe. Trains are only 650m away.

- Continue to develop the fledgling arts and crafting community which has just started up. Provide more resources for avid creators with a modern edge, encouraging a fusion of new themes of pop-culture and gaming with traditional techniques. Whether it's miniatures painting, customising boardgames, creating pop-art or other general craft activities, it's all welcome at The Loot Room. There will be general meetups, how-to sessions, group and individual projects, and supplies available in store.

- LCG's & CCG's. These are a must do for any gaming store wanting to make retail revenue. To date, Living/Collectible Card Games have not been a focus at The Loot Room however, we would like to get setup to support the local card gamers community with a good range of stock, game night and tournament kits and prizes. Magic, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Doomtown, Netrunner, Star Wars etc. are some of the lines we are considering.

- If we make all this happen then we will very well need a larger premises. Some discussions have already taken place with Bake&Burger about combining our efforts into a full scale boardgame cafe in the not-to-distant future. Whether this pans out, or some other idea, we will remain in the same general location and adding either a cafe experience or significant in store retail, or both.

- Whatever you want! We want to respond to your needs and make our space your space too. "Build it and they will come" is the saying so you tell us what to build and it may just happen.

The new financial year is our goal for funding which gives us six weeks to bring together a tight plan for executing changes.

Owning a game store seems to be the dream of so many gamers but for many it is an impossible dream. The concept of a Friendly Local Game Store (FLGS) seems to be slipping away these days with the rise of big online retail business and franchise gaming stores driving out the smaller independant stores. Boardgame cafe's are gaining prominence now but these draw most of their income from the cafe. Our concept of a social/community space is something which we feel is somewhat unique. We started out being just about games but it has become much more than that. We want to continue being a meeting and sharing place, where you come to play games, learn games, customise games, create games, make friends, make contacts, create art, do business and more. We pride ourselves on supporting a community, not just running a venue to make money from.

We have been overwhelmed by the support we have recieved from day one and particularly the support shown by our regular patrons during our personal struggles this year. Helping us take this step with the business will enable us to keep providing the same quality experience you are used to with a lot of added benefits. You will also be helping us personally as we continue to fight with health and treatment in coming months.

With sincere thanks,
Jackie & Josh
