Charlie's Rehabiltation Journey

Donation protected
Hi friends, family, and strangers.

My name is Mark Shannon.

The man in this picture, is my father-in-law Charlie.

On Oct 18 2015, my father and Charlie were in the woods above Oliver BC when Charlie suffered a devastating fall. He was unable to move and was barley able to breathe. If my dad wasn’t there to get him emergency care, Charlie's story would be very different.

He was immediately air lifted to Kelowna General Hospital and later that night was air lifted to Vancouver General Hospital, and has remained in intensive care since. Charlie has suffered severe damage to his spinal cord at the C-Spine level, and is paralyzed from the neck down. The injury was high enough on his spinal cord that he cannot control his diaphragm to breathe on his own, which means a machine has to breathe for him. My mother-in-law, my wife, and my 11 month old daughter are staying near VGH and are with Charlie every day. This is going to be a long road and we are learning as we go.

From flights, to food and lodging, and all of the other unexpected expenses we have been burdened with, there is no way to tell what this awful tragedy is going to financially cost us in the end. He is unable to talk or eat. This situation has been incredibly hard on us as a family. We need your help.

Charlie doesn't  have insurance, nor do they have a lot of money. Charlie is an extremely energetic person and hard worker. He was in great physical shape and always doing something.  Right now Charlie is trapped. His mind is fully cognitively intact, but he can only communicate by moving his mouth and eyes.

This family would be the last to ever ask anyone for help and be the first one to help anyone in need.  Charlie is my wife’s hero, and I am so lucky to have married a woman that comes from such a loving close family. In seconds that day, this family's life was completely turned upside down.

A lot of people might read this and consider donating but will keep scrolling. Not everyone has extra funds and I understand that, but financially we are in a very bad state. Financial stress is just another added stress to my mother-in-law and our family during this hard time. I beg you, please donate. Please help alleviate some of the worry and stress put on us during this holiday season.

No donation is too big or to small. Every penny counts.

Thank you so much for your help.
