Well gang, the news for my pup continues to be good. About 5 weeks ago or so, Miles had an appointment to be put down because his bleeding condition was so bad. But after having switched his medication up once again, he's had a month of stability and progress. He's still shaky and will always suffer from a lack of mobility, and his medication has a lot of side effects. But for the first time since his stroke, I've come to think that I'll have him with me well into the future. I can't say what will happen for sure, and he'll always be at risk, but I'm so thrilled by his improvement. I couldn't have done it without you guys, and I'm so grateful. Latest bill is attached.
Hey guys, the last time I updated you on Miles's condition, it didn't look good. He was having severe bleeding spells, and I was sure I would have to have him put down. Well, after discontinuing one of his medications, we have not had a nose bleed in more than a week. He's looking pretty good as far as energy and movement goes. Yesterday, I took him to the vet, and I am waiting on the results of his blood work. It's impossible for me to say if it will be good or bad news, but I'm feel hopeful. I'll let you know what they say. Latest bill is attached.
Hey guys, I just wanted to tell you that Miles has had a good few days. After the very difficult period with his nosebleeds that I described in the last update, he has had a nice solid stretch of stability -- far fewer nosebleeds and those much easier to control. I will be bringing him in for another checkup once I get paid for some recent work. He and I are enjoying our time together and still taking it a day at a time.
Hey guys, I'm afraid that Miles has taken a turn for the worse. He has been having bleeding issues lately. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a rock and a hard place. One of his medications is designed to thin his blood, in order to prevent another stroke, but that causes him to have bleeding issues. We're going to continue to play with his medication. It's not looking good. I'm not giving up hope. Today's bill is attached.
Hey guys, it's been quite awhile since the last update, so I thought I'd keep you posted. The latest is that I'm leaving Miles to travel for the first time since his illness. I've got an opportunity to visit my hometown on business, and it's a great opportunity to see some family and friends. And, if I'm being completely honest, I need a break from the pooch. I'm happy to care for him, and I'm dedicated to continuing to give him what he needs. But I'm worn out. It's a lot of work, and I haven't really had a break, or an uninterrupted night's sleep, since July 4th. Lately he's been having bad nosebleeds, which are caused by his condition. They aren't really dangerous, but they are scary and really make me feel pretty helpless. We're still experimenting with his medication, hoping that it can reduce his heavy breathing and shaking, which wakes him and me up each night. He's not suffering; his condition is frustrating for him but he's not in pain. But I do need a break.
So he's off to the kennel on Wednesday. I'm super nervous but there's a veterinarian there on staff and he's stable enough to be taken care of by others. I'm confident he'll be OK.
Hey guys, so I'm sorry to say that the pup has had a little setback. We got the results from his recent CBC, and while the Azathioprine has helped to stabilize his blood cell count, it's doing too much damage to his liver to continue. So we're going to switch to a drug called Mycophenalate. Unfortunately that prescription will cost about $100, and the next followup that we have to do this coming week will probably be about $200 as well. But that's how it goes. I'll keep you informed of our progress and post receipts as soon as I have them. Wish us luck.
Hey gang, Miles just came home from his latest vet visit. His clinical stuff all looks good -- he's starting to regain weight, which is important. He lost almost 15 pounds off of a 70 pound frame so weight gain is important. His energy has been good, and his mobility remains much better, though improvements to his coordination appear to have leveled off. He had a whole blood check today, which is quite expensive but will give us a lot of good info. Results coming tomorrow.
Things are good overall. We've moved to a new apartment which physically makes it so much easier for me to get him into and out of the house, and offers more places for him to use the bathroom and wander a bit safely. Bathroom breaks and bedtime remain a struggle for both of us but I'm confident they'll improve. For now, I'm just hoping that we can get past needing to make weekly vet visits, both for the obvious issue of the expense but also to restore a sense of normalcy. I'll keep you posted!
Hey guys, just got back from the latest vet appointment. Miles is status quo, and status quo is good. His red blood cell count and proteins are leveled off and he is getting better clinically by the day. Next week, back to the vet. Here's a video of him showing off his newfound ability to (sort) get around on his own four feet.
Today was Miles's first big follow-up vet appointment. The news was both good and bad. The good news is that he presents clinically as much better to them -- better color in his ears and gums, more energy, much better mobility. He did a neurological consult and they said he is improving very quickly. All of that comports with my own experience.
The bad news is that his bloodwork has not improved as they had hoped it might. After consistently improving, his red blood cell count has leveled off, and he is presenting with some kind of globules (or some such) in his blood that indicates his IMHA isn't improving. So we're adding another immunosuppressive drug, called Azathioprine, and we won't be reducing his prednisone as originally planned.
This is a bummer; the Azathioprine has some pretty significant side effects. But it's also not unusual with IMHA, and the doctors stress that he is improving overall at a good rate. I will keep you all informed. Here's to more improvements in the days to come.
I'm very sorry to tell you that my dog, Miles, has taken very ill this past week, and I'm forced to ask for some help in paying his vet bills. Miles is an 8 year old hound mix, about 70 pounds. Before last weekend, he was in fine health, very energetic. But this past weekend, he stopped eating. That isn't so unusual for a couple days at a stretch, but on Monday he was very lethargic. A trip to the vet brought bad news. Miles has Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia, a type of autoimmune anemia where his immune system is attacking his red blood cells, leaving him tired and lethargic and with labored breathing. It's unclear what's causing this condition. I'm convinced that it was something he ate, as he had metallic material in his colon which has since passed, but the vets aren't sure. His condition is life-threatening and the vets told me there is a good chance he won't make it.
I have not been able to afford to hospitalize him so we have been trying a treatment regimen. He is currently on five medications: prednisone, a steroid designed to suppress his immune system and reduce the attack on his red blood cells; doxycycline, an antibiotic to stave off infections; sucralfate, a drug to protect his stomach from damage caused by those drugs; an antacid; and a small dose of baby aspirin to prevent blood clots. We have been to the vet every day since I first took him in, as well as to Purdue's animal hospital. His treatment has pretty much cleaned me out, financially. I am getting some help from my brother. I am unemployed right now, but I am applying to jobs all over the country and I'm confident I'll find something in the next month. I was planning on just trying to hold on through the end of July. I have been doing some writing for pay, which will really help in the long run, but it tends to take a long time for those jobs to pay. I got a cheap sublet for next month and the rent is paid for, so that's good. But we have another vet visit coming on Monday, and at present I'm not sure how I can continue to take him in.
My goal is for total transparency. I am posting invoices and receipts on the GoFundMe page so that you can see what I am trying to get reimbursed. I arrived at the goal amount of $2890 because that is the amount I've paid for thus far, plus the $2000 that was quoted as an estimate for how much a blood transfusion may cost. A transfusion may become necessary in the next couple days, and as of right now, I couldn't pay for it, which is my immediate worry. Again, I have no interest in asking for any money that is not directly related to Miles's care. I will continue to update you with receipts and invoices, and if I end up with more than his care costs, I will arrange a donation with the Connecticut Humane Society where I got Miles, minus a little bit for odds and ends that I don't have receipts for. I will show proof of that donation as well.
There has been a little bit of positive signs lately. Miles's red blood cell count dropped as low as 12% at one point. (Above 30% is healthy.) But he's crept back up the last couple of days to 16%. He's also eating some again, which is good. I make bland chicken breast and rice for him on doctor's orders, mix it up with a little wet dog food, and feed him by hand. That way I can get him to take his medicines. Because I was advised to limit his physical exertion as much as possible, I have been carrying him up and down the stairs and carrying him to where he likes to go to the bathroom. He also no longer has a fever. However, I want to be upfront in saying that his odds are still not good and that it is likely that, even if you pitch in for his care, he won't make it. If that prevents anyone from chipping in I understand completely.
It's been a very difficult week, full of sleepless nights where I wake up to make sure he's breathing. I am happy to spend the effort to care for him. I just need to get the money together to keep bringing him to the vet. I really feel like I'm on the verge of getting life together if I can just hold on. Miles is my best friend and I love him with my whole heart. If anyone can pitch in, I'll be more grateful than I can say.
