Experiments Blew Up!

It blew up!  Noooooo!  Those were our words.

A group of volunteer educators and scientists have worked for years and spent close  to one hundred thousand dollars of their own money on designing and developing educational science experiments to go to the Space Station under a non profit program called Story Time From Space.

We successfully went through the NASA process and built our own one of a kind hardware. Our kit of experiments was packed onto the SpaceX rocket which launched on Sunday June 28th.
Unfortunately, the rocket blew up a couple of minutes into flight. (see video)

Space exploration is very hard, even though a lot of us take it for granted,  but it is absolutley necessary.
Good science and literacy education is absolutely necessary too which is what our Story Time From Space program is all about.

We won't give up! We want to rebuild our experiment hardware so the astronauts can do the experiments on orbit and share them with students & kids.  These experiments tie into the content of childrens books that the astronauts have already started reading so it is important to get them up there!

This is a sample of just some of the hardware used for one experiment in drawing form and a photo of same hardware used during testing at NASA.

We have 9 experiments like this that all explore the basic science principals of balance, buoyancy, light, surface tension, free fall, heat transfer, orbit, pendulums and effects on the human body.

We are passionate about what this program can accomplish for educators, students and kids all over the world.

You can help. We need $20,000 to start the rebuilding process.   All donations will go towards the equipment. While this won't cover all costs it will get us started!

Please join us as part of the Story Time From Space team by donating any amount!! Every dollar will help!

We are researching if we can purchase a Hero 3 or Hero 4 camera instead of the Hero 2 we had on the original flight. The camera was outfitted with a special lens and provides us data on the surface tension and buoyancy experiments. The trick is that the batteries inside the camera have to be certified. This takes about a month and a bunch of testing where NASA tests the batteries to failure to see if they are safe for up on orbit. Once we know what we can purchase we will use funds raised here to get it. Thank you! That is two parts- kit bag and camera so far. :)

Hi Folks! Bought the material, thread and velcro for the kit bag using donated money. It all has to be Nomex so that it passes the flammability requirements. Nina Jobin have volunteered to make the kit. When all done the instruments and equipment fit in this back along with a very dense foam that protects the equipment from the vibration of launch (not counting blowing up! :) )

Had a great meeting with our NASA and CASIS team. Everyone is onboard and ready to get our new kit, once it's made, through testing and onto a new flight!

What a great group of people to work with- very thankful.
