Make our classroom a learning space

PS 54 is located in the neighborhood of Bed-Stuy in Brooklyn, NY. We are a title 1 school where most of our students receive free lunch. Our class is a third grade classroom with 30 students. We have several students with special needs and many of the students in the class are performing below grade level in both reading and math.
A lot of this is due to lack of materials and lack of funding. Students do not have the math supplies needed to understand the demands of the current curriculum. They are also missing out on reading opportunities because our class library doesn't have books that interest them.
Our class is asking for $1,000. This money will allow us to provide the students with a space that is engaging, comfortable, and a true learning environment. We are hoping to purchase benches for the community area, student-chosen books for the library, manipulatives for the math area, a mailbox for students' notes home, and a variety of storage boxes to organize the materials in the classroom.
This project is important to the third graders of PS 54 because they are all hard working and driven students. They want to learn and what to become successful - however, with the lack of materials, it is difficult for them to feel this sense of achievement.
