Jase is fighting for his life at Devos. He is on lung bypass, dialysis and many medications all due to the flu. This is an update from Abby(mom) just last night,
Here we are 7 days into battling the flu. I am still in shock that a week ago our little boy was sleeping on my lap, throwing the football, running around with the dog and just starting to be sick. And today he is on life support.

Jase is becoming stronger and stronger. The doctors are happy with his improvements but still have some concerns.

They increased the amount of fluid that was pulled off of him today with the dailaysis machine. Which is making Jase look more and more like himself. He is no longer looking so puffy. His eyes look better. His nose, fingers and toes are almost back to normal. And his tounge is no longer sticking out There is talk about disconnecting the CRRT machine tomorrow. His kidneys are still producing urine and bloodwork looked even better today.
We are still struggling to get all the crud out of his lungs. The secretions are very thick...which we want as thin as possible. When it comes time to extubate (remove his breathing tube) they want Jase to be able to cough up any thing that will be left over. If it stay thick (like rubber cement) he will not be able to cough it up and spit it out. We DO NOT want to stress his lungs at all...so him struggling to bring it out wouldn't be good. They have increase the frequency of his IPV treatments...this basically shakes his lungs to break up the mucus, it is now done every 6 hours.
The ECMO machine is running smoothly. The doctors were able to decrease the flow even lower today. Which means...we are closer to removing the cannula's
It's been a long day...and this momma is whooped. We have another battle tomorrow, but we can do it!!!
Thank you again (thank you everyone!!!) for your love, support and prayers!!!!

Jase is a fighter and is getting a lot of attention through all of our prayers so keep them coming!!

That being said, the world keeps going and the bills pile up. Please and Thank You for any donation you can help with!!!

From Abby,
I know a lot of people have been anxiously waiting for an update...it's been a long day with meetings and trying to map out a plan, but I wanted to make sure I got on here and let everyone know what I going on.

Early this morning while sleeping my cell phone rang. I glanced over and saw a 616 number... my heart instantly sank because I knew it was either Jase's doctor or nurse calling. The voice on the other end was calm and told me that everything was okay. But Dr Pott wanted Ryan and I to know that Jase opened his eyes. Ryan and I quickly got down to Jase's room...we spoke his name and his eyes opened. He did not focus on us, but regardless he opened his eyes. I have not seen Jase's big brown eyes in over 1 week. I was overwhelmed with joy!!!

My joy suddenly drifted away after talking to the neuro team. I know they are here to educate Ryan and I and give us all the information. But at the same time a dark cloud covered us. Even though Jase is opening his eyes, moving his hands and arms they are not 100% sure it is purposeful. Today while in his room I know the movements I saw was him telling me something.

As the nurse removed the EEG leads Jase slowly lifted his left arm and moved it towards his head. This is something he would normally do if I was pulling his hair.

When we call his name he will open his eyes.

When I played the opening music to Mickey Mouse Club House his eyes opened even wider.

When I run my hands across his chest his heart rate slightly increases and well has his blood pressure.

He is initiating breathes around the ventilator.

I know this is his way of telling me that he is still fighting. He is still strong. He still has life left in him. I understand the doctors don't want me to get my hopes up...but you know what I AM GOING TOO!!! HE IS MY SON AND I KNOW MIRACLES HAPPEN EVERYDAY!!!

Tonight I hope to be able to wash his hair to remove the sticky mess the EEG leads left behind, give him a bath and read another story!
