Barry Solomon has been the Head Technician of Bethel Veterinary Hospital since 2011.  He has recently been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.  This devasting news comes as a shock to everyone who knows Barry.  Most importantly to his 10 year old son Liam.  Barry starts chemotherapy March 4.   His time away from Bethel Veterinary Hospital and his family will be a huge financial strain on him.  He needs to focus all his energy on fighting his cancer and not worrying about bills.  Please help support one of the kindest and loving people we know!  Barry is so  compassionate and loving toward animals we want to show how much we appreciate him!

Hello everybody.
Long time no hear. Hope this message finds everybody healthy and happy as summer comes to a close.
, I am waging a war against leukemia. There have been many long and winding battles but at this time I am at remission. Yay In order for me to finish this war and be cured I am going to be sent away to Yale New Haven Hospital for a bone marrow transplant in the very near future. I can't thank everybody enough for helping me get to this point.
If you thought this was the difficult part wait till you hear the next one.. The plan is to send me away for about 6 to 8 weeks to under go chemo and then the bone marrow transplant. I have been told it will be an additional 6 months after that until I can get out of my apartment.
I wanted to let everybody know what was going on and how much I really appreciate it all that this community has done for me.
If you know , then you know i have no intention of losing this battle. I accept to see one and all of you and your fantastic pets at the next possible moment.
Until then, please send me your positive vibrations, good energy , prayers and anything else you think will help.
Special thanks to the Bethel Veterinary Hospital and the excellent staff.
Sincerely,
Barry

Wow. Just had a rare moment. Lasted about.3 seconds but it was a really good .3 seconds. Driving in the jeep windows down smell of green in the air. Forgot about everything for a split second and enjoyed the moment. And when the moment ended it was noticeable. Reality kicking in as I drive up to Danbury hospital for what has become a routine visit. I still can't believe it!!
But numbers don't lie. Today's numbers are good. I'm happy. But I will definitely need a transfusion of platelets. No doubt about it. on the bright side a platelet transfusion is usually quick, and I won't lose the whole day in the system. I'll be able to work a few hours today. Thank goodness. I've lost so much work time recently. I see neutrophils being recorded as well. Fantastic news!!! Gotta be something right going on. A light at the end of a tunnel?!
I think we are an underdog society. Always have been. Comes from the way our country was created. The cards I've been dealt portray me as the underdog. I think otherwise, and people who know me would agree. I'm downright blessed enough to have people in my life to help me, work with me, play with me, and hold me. Words fail to express my thanks to you all,

To my family, friends, anyone reading this letter, and all the powers and elements that be.I hope this letter finds you happy and healthy. As I write you this update I am at Danbury hospital getting a transfusion. I have been here often enough to know the nurses by name and visa versa. I have given many of them seashells from my collection gathered, scuba diving, or beach combing, in appreciation for the great job they do. As I reflect back on these past few months, I am ecstatic at the fact that I am sitting here reflecting at all.
The initial shock of the diagnosis has waned. Let me assure you,one and all,I am not dying of cancer. I am living with leukemia. In the shadow of a horrible disease, many bright points have arisen. I am a lucky man. Your support and compassion has been remarkable assets in my battle.
And how goes the battle? Well, as a wise person once said, I have some good news and I have some bad news. Lol Actually There's more good news than bad. First, I feel great.Almost normal most times. I only wish I could go back to work. I miss the animals as much as the mental and physical stimulation. Perhaps I don't give this disease the credit it's do. I don't wear a mask as often as I should or sit at home cautiously surviving. I have reached my outer limits on the baseball field working with the kids in the Bethel baseball league. I've learned to take a knee sometimes, as well as some other adjustments. I'm just glad to have the opportunity. I plan on continuing to live my life to the best of my ability.
I have recently found out that the clinical drug trial I was JUST enrolled in has been closed. I was among the last candidates accepted. How lucky is that?
The bad news is related to my most recent bone marrow biopsy. Still moving in the wrong direction. frustrating but not really surprising. The disease had great momentum when first diagnosed. Traditional chemotherapy had no effect to slow it down. So I'm not shocked the first dose of this chemo hasn't turned it around. Gotta slow it down first before it can be turned around. I believe we're heading in the right direction. I know we're going to beat this. The Dr. In charge of my case is planning to contact the drug company to increase my dose. Also good news for me. Once enrolled I should always have availability to this drug if it works.
One day at a time✌Some days are Gooder than others. Lol. Thank you all. I hope to see everyone at Bethel veterinary hospital or on the Bethel baseball fields eventually, but for those I don't see do to my abbreviated hours or otherwise, I will continue to write updates to be posted to the BVH website. Have a great day everyone.
Be happy
Be healthy
Sincerely,
Barry
