Worldmapper Webhosting Support

£595 of £1,000 goal

The new Worldmapper cartogram platform Worldmapper.org  was launched in April 2018 during the 125th Anniversary Conference of the Geographical Association in Sheffield (UK) where we presented a totally redesigned online platform and the first 125 new maps. By now we have doubled the content on our new website, and keep adding new maps on a regular basis.

The new website is proving more popular than ever before. Unfortunately this has led to repeated server outages in recent days since the fresh new design and functionalities have considerably increased demands on the webserver that is hosting the Worldmapper homepage.
With this GoFundMe campaign we want to raise the necessary funds that pay towards the running costs for an upgraded server that we would like to switch to to allow more reliability of Worldmapper while it keeps growing, and maintain the archive as well.

In recent years we have put a lot of spare time effort as well as personal finances into the website, so that we hope that you are happy to show some appreciation by donating a small amount towards upgrading to a more powerful webserver that will help us solve some of the issues that we have encountered recently, and will allow us to keep Worldmapper up and running.
We are hosting the website with HostEurope who has been a reliable partner of the Worldmapper platform for many years. An upgraded server costing up to 720 GBP a year would be an ideal solution for us to make Worldmapper capable of growing more and also keeping the map archive alive that still gets millions of hits a year. Your donation could help us covering setup fees as well as financing the server for over a year.

Your help and support - as small or large as it may be - would really make a difference in allowing us to keep Worldmapper going as an educational resource for everyone to enjoy.

As we are nearing the 400-map mark on our website it is about time for another update here in our crowdfunding campaign: The past few weeks have seen the addition of some very topical cartograms, such as a map series on the football world cup (pre- and post-tournament), and a look at the history of whaling in the past 30 years. On our blog we have also added a stunning cartogram animation of 'nature's heartbeat' that was unveiled in a keynote at the 55th Annual Meeting of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ATBC) in Malaysia.
And very recently we started adding the first maps of a new series on migration that looks at where people migrate from to each country and vice versa. This will be an extensive series that we are going to add in small tranches over the forthcoming months.

Thank you again all of you who have supported us so far over the past months. We really appreciate your support. Since we are still working towards our funding goal that will help us to keep the website running for the next years, please keep spreading the word in your circles. Every donation, no matter how small or large, makes a big difference!

339 maps and counting: We have slowed down a little bit with adding new maps since our stock of finished cartograms has depleted. Therefore we have restarted our map-production assembly line to get new content prepared. Stay tuned!
But we haven't been lazy and are currently adding a timely football world cup cartogram series. This shall get you in the mood for the upcoming football frenzy and provides some interesting insights into the geography of this global spectacle.
Meanwhile, our crowdfunding campaign continues. We are looking for support to help us finance the new webserver that we have moved the Worldmapper platform to. Please spread the word and let your friends know about our campaign: Ever little donation helps us, and when we have reached our crowdfunding goal we will be able to keep Worldmapper up and running so that we can continue to add content. Please support us and help us reaching this goal!

While our crowdfunding campaign has come to a bit of a standstill in recent days, we haven't been lazy: Worldmapper has now 329 maps online, including some timely new ones such as the most recent Ebola statistics, and some visualisations of the world's billionaires according to the Forbes Ranking. And we have sent out the first edition of the new Worldmapper newsletter which keeps subscribers informed about the latest changes and newest additions on our website. You can subscribe to it on our website!

Your contribution has already made a big difference and keeps us going to put more work into Worldmapper. Please help spreading the word about our crowdfunding campaign. There is still a long way to go to make it to our goal that will support us in financing our new webserver that is now up and running smoothly.

We have successfully switched Worldmapper to a new (and no longer shared) webserver at our webhosting provider Hosteurope. After some initial glitches the website is running very stable.
Now help to make this crowdfunding effort fully successful so that we can finance the new webserver for the next 1-2 years which will give us some breathing space to work on more maps, new material, and other exciting things.
We just crossed the 300-maps mark and are currently at 307 maps on the new website!

Thanks for all your help so far, and please keep donating and spreading the word. We still have a way to go until our crowdfunding is successful!
