Working in China

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Jayde, I am 20 and I am currently trying to fund myself to work in China. I have been accepted into the Intern Group programme and I have been chosen out of 30,000 applicants to work in an NGO in China for 6 weeks in summer 2020, but it comes at a £5,000 fee. I'm hoping to raise funds to pay for the programme costs and my flights to Shanghai (£ 800).

I have always taken my education very seriously and by being one of the first in my family to attend university, it has always been important for me to dream big and aim high.

Before going to University I had managed to make some big achievements that lead me on my path to success:

-  I was Head Girl, Head of the Prefect body and Student Council in my Secondary school/Sixth form
-  I was elected Youth Mp for Lambeth which allowed me to represent my borough in Parliament
- Met prominent Mp's including Sadiq Khan, Chuka Ummuna, Katie Hoey, John Bercow and many more.
-  Campaigned for Mental Health and started a Mental Health Awareness week at my school as part of the Make Your Mark Campaign
-  Encouraged younger students in my school to get involved with politics through organising elections, taking students to have meetings with MP's, Mock Presidential debates etc
-  Had an article written about me in the Local Newspaper https://www.brixtonblog.com/2016/10/i-am-your-amplifier-says-youth-parliament-member-krystelle/40760/
- Debated in Lambeth Council meetings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SA4VX5kg5B0&t=83s
-  I was runner up in the South London Debating Competition
-   A part of a published anthology called 'Lifts it by the Legs'  as part of the First Story project.
- Nominated by my peers to recite 2 of my original poetry pieces at Oxford University and UCL.
-  Organised careers fair with the Lambeth Youth Council with 40+ companies and organisations to talk to students about potential career paths
- Organised and hosted a Youth Gala in Brockwell park to celebrate young peoples talents and Achievements.
- Had dance performances at the Royal Festival Hall, Sadler Wells, Southbank, Rambert Dance studios and Lyceum Theatre in partnership with the Royal Academy of Dance and the Jack Petchey Foundation

From a young age, I have worked my hardest to not only push my self to the best of my abilities but also do it in a way that can benefit the community around me.

I have now completed my second year at university but it has been the hardest year of my life. I lost my Grandad, one of my biggest supporters, during exam season. Also, I dislocated my knee and tore a ligament (MCL) after teaching a dance class. I was so honoured to be elected Dance Captain for Afrodynmaix ( a dance society at my University) because dance has always been my passion and source of joy. But, losing the ability to have it as an outlet especially after losing my Grandad (who was also a big dancer) took a mental stroll on me in ways I could never have imagined. A year later I am still struggling but I am fighting on as he always taught me and still hear him now, even through tough times, 'Life goes on darling'.

My parents have tried to support me as much as they can but as the current system works, if your parents earn over a certain amount you are not eligible for any grants, funding or support. This has meant that my parents have struggled and sacrificed to support me through university. This means-tested system doesn't account for dependents ( my parents have 4 children), funeral costs or any financial burdens my family already has. This means that I have watched many friends live well with government grants and bursaries or benefit from having wealthy parents while I have not been blessed with such luxuries. As we sit just above the cut-off, we are frozen out of support and financially burdened by not earning on the top bracket to make funding viable.

I'm tired of always asking for money, I'm tired of having to be dependent on my family, I AM TIRED OF BEING A FINANCIAL BURDEN. It feels like I've worked so hard to achieve everything I have up to this point but it's not enough. I have always wanted to go to China and I joined my course with the plan of eventually working in China and I have been finally given the opportunity, but at a cost.

Any money you can give to support me will not only be making a young black girl's dream come true but you are investing in a role model for young black youths. You are investing in someone who wants to give back to younger generations. You are investing in that 15-year-old who worked her hardest to become a youth MP and only dreamed about living in China.

I have been close to giving up more times than I can count but I haven't because, as my grandad always said, 'Life goes on..'

I will be posting a full list of my achievements and what they entailed & Updates of how your contribution helps - https://www.facebook.com/krystellejaydemyp/
