Send the Trio to Poland!

Donation protected
Hello World,
We are three high school seniors who were recently selected for the U.S. U20 national ultimate frisbee team, which will be competing at the World Junior Ultimate Championships in Wroclaw, Poland this summer. We are extremely honored to have the opportunity to play ultimate internationally, at such a high level. However, there are extensive fees associated with this event, such as travel to Poland and the various training camps preceding the tournament, lodging, food, etc. To this end, we would like to ask for your support in sending us to Worlds. We are all very passionate about ultimate and have learned and grown a lot as a result of playing this sport. A donation of any size would mean a lot to us.

Here are our stories of journeys to the U20 National team.

I was first introduced to ultimate in the sixth grade (2009) when my brother first started playing in his freshman year at Berkeley High School. With ultimate being the first competitive sport I have ever played, I quickly became invested into how the game was played and how I could improve many aspects of it. In the summer of 2009, my parents decided to sign me up for the Bay Area Disc Association (BADA) Ultimate Summer Camp which further helped me on my skills throughout my middle school career. With my middle school not having an organized team, I was given the opportunity to play with Berkeley High School. From that point on, I started participating for BADA’s Youth Club Championships (YCC) teams in 2011, 2012, and 2015 to help expose high levels of national competition. I also represented the Birmingham Ultimate Youth Association (BUYA) in 2014 with Birmingham Forge. Most recently, I have been given the chance to play for the San Francisco Dogfish in the MLU (Major League Ultimate). I have been so blessed to be given all of these opportunities to play high level ultimate, and being chosen to represent the United States of America at the World Junior Ultimate Championships (WJUC) in Wroclaw, Poland gives me the opportunity to further improve my skills at the highest level. In order to achieve my lifelong dream of experiencing international cultures, meeting new people, and bonding with my new teammates at WJUC, I need your help financially to make this dream a reality.

Growing up, I'd been exposed to a plethora of sports including Basketball, Soccer, Lacrosse, and Baseball. It wasn't until middle school when my school gardener/ultimate coach introduced me to the ultimate. Despite being actively involved in my soccer and basketball teams, I quickly developed a passion for ultimate. That passion evolved into a dedication to the game as I began excusing commitment to other sports in favor of playing ultimate for the local high school team, regional Bay Area Youth club teams, and adult-level club team. As I gained experience playing the sport and making new friends along the way, I learned not only how to increase my ability as an athlete, but also how to present myself as a person. Perhaps the most valuable teaching that my teammates, coaches, friends, and family have displayed is the importance of promoting one another in spite of oneself, on and off the field.
Time and time again I have seen that what distinguishes ultimate from other sports is this strong sense of community. It is for this reason that I feel comfortable asking everyone who has impacted my life in such an influential way to support my friends and I once again, as we search for the funds to fulfill our dreams.

Ultimate has helped me grow in a myriad of ways, both as an athlete and a person. I began playing the sport at my middle school when I was in seventh grade. My school was trying to form a team and I didn’t have anything better to do after school, so signed up and started going to the practices. To be perfectly honest I found ultimate very frustrating at first, but working through this frustration and mastering the fundamentals of ultimate taught me an important lesson in perseverance and brought out my tenacity. I continued to develop through Bay Area Disc Association programs, such as the Summer Camps and the YCC teams, and through the ultimate program at Berkeley High. Playing on these teams, with players who were much older and more skilled than I was at the time, forced me to learn quickly and to become confident and assertive as both a player and person. The most important thing I have learned from ultimate is how balance aggression and competitiveness with supportiveness and spirit of the game. I am honored to have the opportunity to play at such a high level, with such an amazing group of people, and to get to experience the international ultimate community firsthand. I would like to thank my family, my teammates and my coaches me for constantly pushing me and supporting me in my pursuit of this incredible sport. Ultimate means a lot to me, and I would be extremely greatful for any donation you could make.
