We are the Venezuelan delegation to represent the country and our public university (Universidad Central de Venezuela - Caracas, Venezuela) in the Washington Model of the Organization of American States 2017 (WMOAS).
We've been working hard, academically and in matters of administration to make it to our main goal, which is representing our country and our university in the Headquarters of the OAS in Washington D.C.
This goal is not impossible, but it is really hard for us due to the terrible economical/political situation Venezuela is going through in this moment.
This is very important for us, our university, our families and those in the country who support us. And unfortunately, we don't have any kind of help from the government.
For you to have a brief panorama of our economic situation, in case you did not know the minimum wage in Venezuela is $15 (PER MONTH) standing among the lowest minimum wages in the entire world, yes, our situation is THAT bad. The national currency is also highly depreciated: $1 = 1000 Bs (Venezuelan currency), and the minimum wage is 15.000 Bs/Month, so only one dollar and a half (USD 1,50) is 10% of the minimum wage here in Venezuela.
We also came to this funding web page asking for international support because since the year 2003 the government imposed a strong “currency control”, meaning that if you are a Venezuelan citizen and want to go abroad due to academic activities, health issues, business or tourism you won´t have free access to any foreign currency, pretty much the government decides if you travel or not and ,as a consequence, a black market was created from those few citizens who get access to the foreign currencies, selling the mentioned currencies to unaffordable prices.
Due to the fall of oil prices in the past couple years no one´s getting any foreign currency for the mentioned activities, forcing the Venezuela citizens to stay in the country or going to the unaffordable black market. In case you are wondering why the fall of oil prices concern us; Venezuela´s economy is based in oil exploitation. Regarding our activities we have one fundraising activity called “Potazo” (big jar) that consists in going twice a month to the streets with a big placard, which explains our activity, and plastic jars asking for money to buy black market´s currencies but due to the high inflation rate (500%, highest in the world and increasing) what we get in this activity in our national currency “bolivares” are meaningless for buying black market´s currencies for funding this academic activity. As we initially said, we don´t have the government´s support, therefore we have gone to private companies asking for funding but due to the economic crisis we are all facing, they haven´t been able to help us, this is why we are hopefully here asking for your kind help to make this dream come true.
For spending the 10 days we'll be in Washington D.C we'd need at least $600 each delegate (there are 12 of us) this is for paying the accommodation, and your help would also be our funds for food and transportation, for all of us, while the activity is carried out. Besides, there is a fee we have to pay to the organization that hosts the event, which is the inscription in the model that are 900$ the whole delegation.
After so many months of preparation and hard studying, we're not giving up just now. Imagine you work hard for a whole year for something you want real bad, and just a few days before the achievement someone tells you: “you won't do it”.
Your help would be a huge impact in our lives; this experience would be a big plus in our academic experience. Besides, just by the fact that we'll have the honor to represent our country is a reward enough for not giving up in this dream just yet, and come to you for your help and support.
For eight years our university has participated in the WMOAS, and we don't want to be the first ones failing in our main goal.
In this journey we've had many obstacles and challenges that we have overcame successfully, and now we come to you asking to help us overcome this last one obstacle with us. We have to collect as much as we can to make our dream come true.

Somos la representación del país y de la Universidad Central de Venezuela en el Modelo de la Organización de los Estados Americanos en Washington (WMOAS por sus siglas en inglés), y necesitamos de su ayuda para lograr nuestra meta.
Como muchos saben, estamos en una situación económica bastante grave en nuestro país, y el poder obtener dólares es casi imposible.
Estamos trabajando muy duro preparándonos para el gran evento en Washington del 10 al 14 de Abril. Pero necesitamos contar con una base monetaria suficiente para poder cubrir gastos de estadía, inscripción al modelo, comida y transporte.
Somos 12 los que conformamos esta delegación y necesitamos:
$7560 para gastos de estadía (Tres habitaciones. Es decir, $2520 por habitación de 4 personas para 8 noches) $900 para el pago de inscripción al modelo y al menos $1500 para gastos de transporte y comida.
Queremos representar a nuestro país y poner en alto el nombre de Venezuela en este evento académico tan importante. Pero necesitamos una ayuda extra!
Pedimos su ayuda si está a su alcance; cada dólar cuenta. De no ser así, con la difusión de la campaña a personas o instituciones que piensen que nos puedan dar cualquier tipo de ayuda sería perfecto.
