Wipe Every Tear Condom Project

Tax deductible
The Condom Project for Wipe Every Tear is a Capstone Project taken on by two  seniors of Boise State University.

The purpose of this project is to provide condoms to the  women and girls trapped in the sex trade of Angeles City in the Philippians to help protect the ladies against HIV/AIDs and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Why provide condoms?

In Angeles City,  Philippians there is a street full of 12,000 women and girls. These women and girls were lured to the city with promises of jobs a chance to make money and to provide themselves and their families with a better life. The people that lured them into the city away from their villages and families coerced them with stories. The stories of the city expressed to them paint a beautiful picture of a chance as an unskilled worker as housekeepers, cooks, servers and nanny’s; only to discover arrival that these jobs are filled or never even existed. After arrival to their new city the girls and women are taken to a “bar,” these bars are fronts for prostitution rings and these women and girls are brought there by human traffickers.

These women and girls now trapped and indebted to the “bars,” must pay back their "debt". On average the price to take a woman or girl back to a hotel may be sixty dollars US for the entire night into the morning. Of this sixty dollars the ladies only receive forty to fifty percent, in turn the money must provide her with food and shelter. At this rate, the debt this woman owes to the bar could take a lifetime to earn. The ladies that work the bars may only have one sexual client a week, during the rest of the week they make may make 120-300 Philippine pesos by having drinks with potential clients which equals out to $2.39-5.97 a day. With the cost of their debt, food, shelter and trying to send money back home most of the sex workers in the Philippines cannot afford the luxury of condoms.
Through research for this project I found that the average cost of a single condom can range from a dollar to a dollar fifty, an amount that these ladies are unable to afford. Through my research I found a condom distributer that sells condoms at a very discounted rate to non-profits. Through this distributor we will be able to purchase condoms for ten cents each. With that in mind our goal is to raise $500 so that we can obtain the 5,000 condoms to get the project launched in Angeles City.

It is important to provide condoms to these ladies for several reasons. One according to Foss, Watts, Vickerman and Heise (2004), “condoms are protective against HIV infection, reducing the probability of HIV transmission per sex act by as much as 95%” (p.185).  Murray (2008) in her book states that, “the desired age for prostitutes in Asia, for example, is thirteen to sixteen years old” (p. 178). In a study done by Urada, Silverman, Cordisco Tsai and Morisky (2014) it is stated that, “individuals entering sex work before age 18 are at higher risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)/HIV” (p. 1586).

What Wipe Every Tear does:

Wipe Every Tear pays off the debt to the bar that the ladies may owe, pays for a college or technical school education depending on the woman or girl’s competency, feeds and houses them all through donations. Kenny the founder and his staff have a vision of wanting to help every woman trapped in the sex trade, but they also want to make small differences along the way. This is where the condom project began. In a personal interview with Kenny he expressed this need, "there are so many girls and we want to help those that don’t come to the safe houses too. The need is basic, we would like you to try and get a condom manufacturer to donate condoms to give out during our outreaches.”

What has happened so far:

We have approached four condom manufactures with our donation letter. Thankfully one group Global Protection has come through with a donation of 1,000 condoms. Unfortunately, the other three have yet to get back to us,or told us they never donate to non-profits.

What YOU can DO!

You can help us by raising the money needed to get the remaining 4,000 condoms. The amount of $500 includes the condoms and the money that GoFundMe requires for running a fundraiser on their website.

THANK YOU FOR STOPPING BY!!!!
