Curling aspirations for 2022
Curling is a relatively new sport in Western Australian. It was started three years ago and members of WA Curling curl once a week at a Ice skating arena. Over the last three years my passion for the game has returned and for the last two years I entered a team in the Australian National championships. Last year I won the Pacific- Asian Mixed doubles competition. This experience allowed me to dream and motivated me to work extremely hard to improve my physical stamina, mental toughness and curling skill level. This growth and dedication has earned me a spot on the Australian Men's Curling team.
I am an ambitious person and now dream of competing in the next Winter Olympics. To qualify for the Olympics you have to acquire points by competing and placing in a variety of curling events throughout the next four years. Let me be clear....This is a dream. We have not earned any qualification points yet and have a lot of work ahead to make this a possibility.
The first step to reaching our goal will be to get more ice time and international competition experience. Our plans are to travel to Canada in October 2018 to train for two weeks prior to competing in the Pacific-Asian Curling Championships in South Korea in November. If we qualify at this competition we will have a spot at the World Championships to be held in Canada in March 2019.
Each year for the next four years we will have to travel to accomplish these goals as there is no designated curling facility in Australia. Even the Australian National competitions are held in Naseby, New Zealand - the only dedicated curling rink in the southern hemisphere. So any on ice training will be done overseas.
I am the only member of the team from Western Australia the rest of the players are from Sydney and Melbourne but our goals are the same - to be the first Australian curling team to qualify for the Winter Olympics in the sport of curling.
Every flight I take out of Australia is easily $1800-2200 and during the time away I will need money to pay for accommodation, meals, entry fees, and ice rental fees for training. I will have to make at least three different flights each year for these competitions. I am currently seeking corporate sponsorship for the team here in Perth but have yet to find any. I honestly believe that the team has the dedication and ability required to qualify for the Olympics, the biggest challenge for me may be the financial one. Any financial help you may be able to offer would be greatly appreciated.
Please note: Any funds raised in this campaign will go towards my personal expenses in trying to attain this goal.
