Harrison's Diagnosis:
Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare vascular tumor that arises from the lining of the blood vessels. In fact, EHE represents less than 1% of all vascular tumors. It can appear anywhere in the body, but for Harrison, the tumor grew in his liver. The cause of EHE is currently unknown, and the tumor behaves differently in every person; some remain stable for years, some go away without treatment, and unfortunately, some grow rapidly, spread to other parts of the body, and can be fatal. Treatments for EHE are patient dependent, and include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and pain control. However, Harrison's tumor genome does not respond to chemo or radiation, so the only treatment option for future tumor growth is surgical removal.
Harrison has already gone through one major surgery to have the tumor removed from his liver, but his battle has not ended. The doctors predict more tumors will grow, and the mortality rate with his diagnosis is 70%. In the upcoming months Harrison will need frequent medical care and follow-up appointments, including days of full body scans to look for new tumor growth. This means multiple trips for him and his family from their home in Reno Nevada, to Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, California.
We all know the cost of medical bills can be high, in fact, the Wiltfongs are starting to receive bills that are tens of thousands of dollars. When travel costs and time off work are taken into account, the monetary struggle becomes even greater.
